I recently acquired this 2 piece gray box that nickel guns were shipped from the late 70s into the early 80s. Are these seldom seen? I looked through sold and unsold auction sites and have only found one solid gray box. I saw some period nickel guns in the solid blue boxes. This one doesn’t have labels and might have come as the boxed package that Smith did during this time period with a presentation case. Just wondering are the gray ones scarce?

I'm certainly not an expert, but it seems to me that S&W started introducing the gray 2-piece boxes for their nickel revolvers around the time that S&W changed to using model numbers...1957. This continued into the Bangor Punta era until about 1985. I've never seen an unmarked box like yours without any S&W printing or labels. Could this be a reproduction box? Perhaps some of our Forum experts will be along shortly to share their knowledge.

You are correct about the earlier boxes and they had writing and a silver line or broken line but these solid gray and solid blue boxes were introduced about 1978 and the cases with the tool box. I have a complete outer box, mahogany box and solid box set with the label on the outside. These plain boxes were used for shipping the revolvers instead of in the mahogany cases. I’ve read that they were also used for factory repair return boxes. It is an original and I was wondering how many are out there. Since the stainless revolvers hit about that time, the nickel revolvers reduced. Thank you for responding.

I have a 'like' box in the typical blue. It was used to return one of my firearms that Smith and Wesson did some factory modifications to. So, there is that possibility. Smith and Wesson blue box with no exterior printing.
