I have a 625-6 45Colt Mtn Revolver, it's my S&W pride and joy, but...
while I have thick hands and fingers, my fingers are a bit short to run the N frame double action comfortably.

What I am considering doing is having the rear of the grip frame and grips ground off, making the palm of the hand closer to the trigger, thus making the trigger pull shorter.

Am hoping to be able to remove 1/8 or even 3/16ths of an inch of material, from the bottom of the grip to the top of the frame, keeping the original contours so as to look like factory.

I already have grips that don't cover the back strap, and would also like to have the frame re grooved to match the original.

Has anyone done this? Or is there a smith that you would recommend to do this modification?

Thanks Leadfoot

Don't. Do not ,mess with the frame on a 625-6 Mountain gun.
These are not often found ,and are worth a premium.
The combination of the forged hammer and trigger and the grooved grip
frame were only made a short time.
Our friend and forum member V.M. may have the answer for you
in a pair of custom N frame round butt grips.
Here are a pair of P.C. 625s wearing V.M.s custom grips.
He might even be able to make them smaller, or add finger grooves for you.
P.M. him tomorrow and ask.

If you do decide you want to modify a 625 Mountain ,I would
buy one of the new models with the lock ,and have a qualified smith go at it.

Thanks for listening ,,A.F.

After having several sets of grips on this revolver, from Spigel boot grips to the current round butt smooth Ahrends. The Ahrends have came the closest to being what I need.

Not having a K frame to compare to, what is the distance difference between the two? Will have to do a bit of research.

Thank you for your input Allen.

Sounds like you need a K or L frame gun. That size frame should give you what you're looking for in back of grip frame to trigger reach with open back grips.

The perceived correctness of modifying an N frame aside, the material just isn't there to be removed.

Maybe a wider trigger is the ticket--that way your trigger finger won't have to go so far in to the frame to get at the trigger. Combined with slim or really small grips (maybe something like the old Service grips that simply don't go all the way up to the D/A hump, and then maybe add a grip-adapter to fill in the space behind the trigger guard*), that could be all you need to be able to work the gun effectively.

I'd swap triggers and grips (easy) before irreparably modifying the frame (hard).

Thanks for the thoughts everyone.

Changing to K frame isn't an option, unless they've made a Mtn Revolver in 45Colt in K frame that I'm not aware of.
I'm too far into 45s to want or even consider converting. I do love my punkin rollers.
As to the wide trigger, leverage is not the problem, just reach.
I have to shift my hand around to the right to get the trigger into the first joint of the trigger finger for proper double action usage, which doesn't let me get the proper grip centered behind the frame.
I will modify/thin down the grips under the trigger finger and see what that does, cheap thrill.
