Grip help

Looking for help with a set of grips. Several questions. First, I thought they were for a baby chief but after discussing with two-bit cowboy, think I was wrong there. As you ca see they don’t fit very well on the only j frame I had handy. I’m also trying to figure if they are real stag. I tried the hot pin test. No melting. Like I stuck the pin to a rock. They are heavy. Any opinions? Might fit another j frame better but other j frames are at my other house. Or could they be for another model gun? If real, what sort of value would these have?

They appear to be genuine plastic.

If they are slightly too short they may be for an I frame. If not, the dimensions may be just slightly different from your grip frame.

Thanks murphydog. If they are plastic, its the toughest I've ever seen. It will not melt with a red hot needle. That's what made me think that there is a slight chance they could be real. And they are heavy as well. Not sure and have had very little experience with stag. I'll take them and try on a couple more J frames tomorrow

I looked at the first but not the second photo (of the inside surfaces)...you may be right. The outsides are shiny and that is what made me think synthetic.

If you stuck a red hot pin to the back and they just looked at you I would imagine they are real. What about a Colt Pocket Positive ? I have one I could take some measurements from. I also have a few J and I frame Smiths I could compare the fit of the Colt grips to them.

I did read your post and I can’t tell if they are porous or not with the sanding/machining marks. Here are the closest pictures I can get

These are not the typical thin plastic grips with ribs but are cast of some
type of synthetic material making them solid and heavier.

Genuine authentic vintage faux stag.

I had a set of Faux ivory grips made with real ivory sanding dust mixed with some type of epoxy or glue . They were cast in a mould , the back sanded flat and the front sanded and polished. They looked , felt and had the weight of real ivory grips... I usually can rub ivory on a tooth and tell if it's ivory or plastic...this stuff passed all the test but wasn't real.
Actually the look gave them away slightly ...no growth rings on the butt and the "grain" on the left and right were slightly different ...they looked good but they were different.

I wonder if this is a similar material , cast of faux bone and finished to look like stage ...or , more than likely , made from one of the old Bakelite materials . We had an old telephone with Bakelite parts and the material was very heavy... Yeah..now that I think about it I'm going to say think old bakelite faux stag...they are good looking !
Real stag will have pores some where on the grips , once you inspect some real stag you will notice the tell tale signs .
