Grip Identification Please

Hello all. My brother and I recently inherited by dads collection which included some grips that didn't fit anything he had. I believe the wood stocks are for a J frame, but I'm not sure about the set of stags. Can anyone help clarify what each of these might fit? I did receive a Model 10 M&P, and a Model 36 Chiefs Special from him, along with various other rifles and pistols, but everything already had grips.

The wood stocks appear to be from a S&W K frame, and produced after ca. 1968. They'd be classified as "service stocks", and they may well fit the Model 10. Look on the inside of the right hand stock, and there should be a serial number. Compare that to your Model 10, and those might be the stocks for it.

The stocks on the right look to be make of antler (elk?), and probably fit a J frame gun. It's relatively easy to see if they fit the Model 36.

A lot of folks buy after market grips in an attempt to find something which fits the hand better than factory stocks.

Thanks for the info. The wood stocks did fit the Model 10, though it already had the original grips., so dad must have come across some back ups somewhere. He did a lot of trading across the picnic tables at the flea markets around Kentucky. The stags, as shown in the photo are too big for my Model 36, which is a square butt. Do they still look proper for a J frame round butt based on the profile and relief? I don't have a J frame round butt to compare it to.

The stags may be for a smaller, older frame type, the I-frame. Among the last use of those was the "Baby Chief" which could be considered the earliest J-frame, but still with the smaller grip frame. BTW, I might be interested in them if indeed they are for the I-frame.

Those look pretty close on that square butt frame, try them on a round butt frame.

Thanks worldtraveler, the stags are now safely in hand. I'm not sure why they looked so short on the square butt J-frame, because there was extra material at the bottom when I put them on my Baby Chief. Now I'll have to decide which gun will they be finally fitted to. Public kudos go out to WT for a fine, friendly transaction.
