I am going to invest in a copy of 4th Edition of the S&W book, but until then, generally speaking when did S&W stop serializing grips, specifically for model 60's and also when did they stop routinely furnishing them(60's) with wood grips (stocks)?

According to SCSW 4th, stamping the serial number on the stock panel was discontinued in the mid-70s. That may be when the decision was made, but I have a 17-4 that left the factory in December of 1979 that has the serial number stamped on the stock panel. And I bought the gun new in April of 1980. So I would expect to see the elimination of the stock serial number shortly thereafter.

Pretty much guessing here, but I assume most 60s (other than the LS) were fitted with rubber handles around 1996 with the introduction of the J Magnum frame and cylinder. I think this would be the 60-9 and later. If I am incorrect, hopefully someone will point it out.

Agree, the numbered stocks seem to have disappeared in the early 1980s.
