Just curious questions--------


Natural Grip Materials

I've seen gun grips and knife scales made from several "natural" materials —elephant ivory, elk antler, India red stag, bovine bone, buffalo bone, buffalo horn, sheep horn, etc.

But I don't recall ever seeing anything made from reindeer antler or moose antler.

Are gun grips and/or knife scales made from these two sources? If not, why not?

Ivory Polymer

I think I read that "ivory polymer" is made by adding ivory dust to a polymer resin.

Where does that ivory dust come from?

How much ivory dust must be added to the resin to qualify as "ivory polymer"?

I recall reading a few years ago, when sambar stag got very hard and expensive to find, and elk stag started showing up. Some guy was advertising his grips. He was making them out of moose. And in his advertising he said that elk stag was garbage, so you needed to buy his moose.


Don't recall his name and have no idea if he is still in business, but it has been done.

I have a question relating to natural, as in elk horn, stag horn, etc. grips. I have a 629 and a model 69, both 44magnum, and come with rubber grips. How hard would the horn grips be on the hand with Magnum loads, or even 44special in the case of the 69? Obviously, Ones with a lot of bark would hurt, but if I went with too smooth, that might affect controllability. Any experiences would help.

For me personally, with full house .44 magnums, rubber is for shootin' and everything else is for lookin' at.

I have a set of Pachmayr Grippers which cover the back of the grip frame and that's what I use for shooting.

I'm not overly sensitive to recoil, but I shoot for enjoyment, not to punish my hand.

I've got a nice pair of bone grips from our own executioner cut service style and presently on my 64 no dash along with a tyler. Very old school. I got into a bit of trouble one time when some woman overheard me telling a friend that they came from a human thigh bone. Jeeze some people can't take a joke!!!

This is a Model 25-5 with elk stocks made by bgmntmn of this Forum. Recoil with standard .45 Colt rounds was nothing to remark about.
