Is it necessary to seal the inside surface of grips after removing all old finish with acetone? I know it is common practice to seal all of rifle stocks to prevent absorbing moisture.

No, but I have done it both ways. It is easier and faster to strip the old finish with furniture stripper like Formbys or Crown easy strip , Strip ease(they contain acetone and other chemicals) Use a old toothbrush and extra fine steel wool. The rinse with the acetone.

I use Minwax Helsman Spar Varnish in a spray for a finish . Your choice of sheen. I like satin. So when you spray it just hits the back also. Two to three coats.

Wouldn't sealing the back make them trap moisture like rubber stocks?

I put rubbers on all my shooting guns and never have a problem. Most exotic woods are very oily to begin with so not much moisture will get absorbed. I would think they trap moisture as much as anything else would.

Could be though, I honestly have not seen any info on the subject.

I just see lots of guns that have worn Pachmayrs for years and they are ate up with pitting under them. Then you look at century old S&W's with wood stocks that aren't sealed in back and they are fine. I have no idea.

Here is a bunch of pics of another members grips I did.

He wanted them dark and shiny. I removed a lot of dings and scratches.

Before and after in no particular order.

How did you fix the router cut? With another router??? By hand???

Trade secret. If I told you, I'd have to..............;)

By hand. different grades of paper and I have some checkering tools. I did not re-point the checkering (to much work and it was for free)

On the guns with Pacs, they probably do not take them off and clean underneath. If you put a good rust preventative on a regular basis no problem. I think Eezox is the absolute best long term rust preventative.
