From what I see, it appears that the thread size for current grip threads is 5 x 44. Is that correct? Does anyone have a source for threading dies of that size?

You may find that modern grip-screws are a bit too snug in older (pre-'42) grips. There was a change in thread size by .003 during the war. Chasing the old grips @.122x44 with a current 5x44 tap will open it up just enough to accept the newer screws. Often, repeated removal of the old hardware had the same effect, making the parts interchangeable.

5-44 threading dies are listed on Amazon - $6.00. I'm simply planning to make a few up on my lathe rather than buying them, just as sort of a hobby project.

Is 5-44 the correct thread for newer S&W sideplate screws also?

FYI, other K frame screw sizes are:
5x44 - side plate
4x48 - upper side plate
6x40 - cylinder stop (pre '62)
3x56 - rear sight leaf (pre '93)
6x48 - ". ". ". (Post '93)
6x44 (?) thumb piece screw
8x32 - strain screw
4mm x 0.7 yoke retention system (post '88)
We could use a reliable source for screws. Go for it!
