Seems to me there'd be a good market for a high quality aftermarket replacement J , K and N-frame grip screw. In stainless , blue and nickle. Darn near every revolver with stock grips I see for sale has a buggered up grip screw.

Does anyone know if there are screws available?

No aftermarket that I'm aware of but if you do a search in the Classifieds forum you'll find an old thread started by a gentleman down South who apparently has a decent quantity of new old stock factory screws he sells at a very fair price, a great guy to deal with.

"buggered" grip screws

Several times when we visited the S&W factory, we were amazed at the number of NEW guns turned out with the grip screws showing screwdriver marks.

We watched the final atachment of the grips at the range and were the able to then understand ----the grips screws were attached to the grips after the test firing.

They were tightened with a tool which looked like a hand operated drill with a screwdriver bit instead of a drill bit.

Surprised that many guns didn't have marks on tyhe grips as well.

I've always been able to find them after placing a, WTB/WTT post on this forum. I have thought about going to a place down the road from here called "Fastenall" or something like that. I used to but quite a few different types of screws, stainless and blued looking ones for different projects. I even thought about the hex head type being harder to bugger than a slotted screw, but much more un-factory looking for sure.
Have a good one,

At this point in time there is probably a good market for new-old-stock grip screws, but the cost of producing them (there are actually many variations) and advertising them would probably be cost prohibitive for someone to do as a business. No company is going to produce a box or two, they want to produce thousands, and someone would have to lay out a lot of coin for a slow financial recovery.

I myself have been looking for a set of replacement screws for a pre model 36 Chief's Special manufactured in 1951. This is a 5 screw model (actually 6 if you include the thumb latch SCREW, not the typical nut) and to make matters more difficult, I need this set to be Nickel plated! I have tried all the usual vendors, smaller shops, gunsmiths and collectors, but so far I have come up empty handed. In fact I have just about given up. I refurbished the original screws to the best of my ability and they do look OK, but I would still love to acquire an original set one day.

Getting back to grip screws, if you are handy you can make them yourself. If you scour the net you cam come up with a similar non gun screw of similar dimensions and remove the extra threads in the middle of the shaft. You can custom cut the length and polish the end. There are a few vendors who still sell #3, #4 and #6 Fillister head screws and as a last resort with a little patience and some hand crafting, a screw that is almost identical to a Factory grip screw can be fashioned. I have done this more than a few times, and I have posted the website where I have bought the screws from about a year ago. I can't remember the website at this moment, but if I do find it I shall post it again.

Individual Scope Screws, Etc.

Above is the website that I bought a few Fillister head screws from to make my grips screws out of. His website does not seem to be working this moment, but his address and e-mail address are there. Grip screws are relatively easy to fabricate from ordinary Fillister head screws if they are the correct (or longer) length and thread size
