growing tomatoes

I've got some tomatoes growing, so I thought I'd post some pictures:

Here's todays harvest. They are brandwines, which are getting sun scalding, Tiny Tims, banana legs, Ceylon, and the little brown ones are brown berries.

We've tried somewhat to encourage them to grow up on some frames:

But my wife got carried away and planted some in the front of the boxes as well, so it's well and truly out of control:

Ceylons are indeterminate, meaning they bear for a long time, heat tolerant, and they taste OK, but not great:

The yummiest are the little brown berries:

The banana legs sometimes have green stripes on them. They are more paste tomatoes with lots of flesh.

Nothing better than home grown maters. Nice crop!. Can you eat them all or do give away to friends, neighbors? We had a really large harvest a few years ago and I ended up dropping them in boiling water, skinned them and froze them for sauce.

Very nice! In town I only have two tomato, three pepper, and four spice plants. Still a good yield.

Those big ones look like one slice would make a sandwich !!

I have tomato plants out back, but the damn critters keep eating them right before the turn red. Next year I am going to have to plant them somewhat closer to the house and maybe build a screen box around them. I'm not sure if it's ground squirells, chipmonks or desert iguanas that's doing the damage, but it's one of the three.

I've got some Big Rainbow and Cherokee purple tomatoes growin nothin ripe yet though. I like to make cages for mine out of concrete wire grid, it makes cages about 5 feet tall and about 2.5 feet wide last year I had plants that were about 7 foot tall after bending over the edges of the cage when i pulled them up and stretched them out they were over 14 feet long.

Aside from tomatoes I also have a few Royal Black Peppers and giant bell peppers, I'll try to get some pics up tomarrow.

I always plant a couple tomato plants off the back deck. This year they went crazy! Maybe all the rain we had. They're in cages, and prob 4 1/2 feet tall. Seems like every other day I'm picking at least a couple ripe ones. I think I have around 8 on the counter, with a couple more ready for picking. Time to take a walk to the neighbor's! A fresh picked red ripe tomato can't be beat! Nothing like the red baseballs you get in the grocery store!
