On the Range!
Pretty peeved at the moment.

Been wanting to pick up 15-22 for my boy. He's been shooting his Ruger that we have "tacticaled" out, but he prefers my 15-22.

So I finally found one in stock at a local WM. As today was my wife's birthday and we had birthday activities planed, I couldn't get the the WM until later this evening.

Well I arrive at the WM, and there it was in the display case. Beams of golden light emanating from it like Thor's Hammer! I was besides myself with excitement!

So I hunt down a WM associate, explain my disire to purchase the 15-22, and start the back ground check.

About a third of the way through, the associate stops me and states that their is a card attached to the weapon and there is a hand written note saying, "pending"?

He calls over a manager and shows him the note. The manager states that the weapon "might" be sold, they "might" just be waiting for the other persons back ground check to clear?

I was like WTH?

He then stated that sometimes the background checks can take a few days?

They must be waiting for it to clear before completeing the sale. I explained that I have purchased mutiple firearms over the years and several in just the last few months.

Even at the hight of the AR buying frenzy, it had never taken more that 40 minutes?

I asked, if the firearm is sold pending a back ground check, why is it still on the display rack, with the for sale tag attached and not in storage in the back?

They couldn't provide an answer.

I asked that if indeed they were waiting on the background check to be completed and it didn't go through, what the procedure was so that as next in line, I would be allowed to purchase the firearm. The manager stated that I would have to hope that I was there if or when the background came in.

If it didn't go through and I was there, I would then be allowed to buy it. If it didn't go through, I wasn't there and someone else was and wanted it, they would get it.

Needless to say, I feel like I got screwed!

Not a happy camper at the moment.

Sorry to hear that..... that stinks. Not instant gratification like a local store pickup, but I was on Kittery Trading Post's website earlier today and they showed quite a few in stock - with and without the flash hider. Prices are reasonable, not sure how they would compare to WM.

Our local Walmart does the same leaves then in the rack until sold. The lift the weapon up and place a pending piece of paper under it until it's gone..

Sorry for the bad luck.

That's a bummer. Did he offer you a few bricks of .22 shells to make up for your trouble?

A similar situation happen to me at m local Academy when i purchased my my SD9Ve. It had a pending sale ticket on, the sales rep. spoke to the manager and the manager said if my background check is ok to go ahead and sell it to me. That manager was juts being a hard ***.

In my neck of the woods, Bass Pro, Cabelas and GAT Guns put it on layaway while the background check and waiting period are pending. You can put a deposit or pay in full, but it still goes on layaway. It is taken off the rack or shelf and put away until you pick it up.

Other stores may have a different business model, but what I've described doesn't cause any misunderstandings or hard feelings.

Same **** happened to me at my local WM in January. I called the store because the web showed they had the 15-22 "Limited Stock". I drive over all stoked to get mine and start the process, much like you did. Then the manager comes over and tells the associate he can't sell the gun because it is on "hold". My problem with that was it was nothing more than a spoken hold where the guy had asked them to call when they had one in, no background check, no layaway/deposit. Much like you I asked what I needed to do to buy it and the response was well we will give him as long as he needs to come pick it up. Boy was I pissed.

Should have raised hell. That manager would have been fired real quick. They aren't allowed to hold anything

I don't quite understand why you or anyone for that manner would want to patronize a business who treats a customer in that manner ?? Support your LGS as they will be there for you in the future and they could use your business way more than WM. My .02 !!!

Yep, this is my LGS and they have plenty of them in stock. Several members here have bought from them with zero issues so you may want to give them a call.

That really sucks! My background checks only took bout 15 minutes lately. It sounds like they might be holding it (for a friend).

Once went in WW at around 10:10pm. Wanted a couple of boxes of ammo. Nobody can find the guy with the key. So the very important night manager decides that "HIS" store no longer sells ammo after 10:00pm. WW has run most of the small stores in my area out of business so you have to go there for some stuff. That and the $5 movie bin is the only reason I still go there at all.
Recently heard the head of WW on the radio saying that anybody that is not a felon can be a WW manager and will earn over $100k. I think that's true and its a waste of money for stupid people. I have never had a manager actually solve a problem there. Don't blame the kids or the old folks working there they are not allowed to make up their own minds. Its the management that drags them in the dirt.

On the topic of the firearm being held, let's not forget that a lot of us get delayed when going through NICS.
Due to having a security clearance while in the Army, I get delayed every time. In fact, I just bought a pistol last week and I had to wait the full 7 days due to no resolution.
Some of you get approved no problem and some of us have to wait. It doesn't mean the store is out to get you or hold the firearm for a friend.

Back in Feb.. when I bought my S&W 9mm I went to the the shop the day before just looking the next day I went back and the counter was full of people looking at all types of guns I over heard the clerk tell someone thats the last one I've got so I just waited and someone waited on me and told him I wanted that gun I looked at yesterday and 10 mins I walked out with it that deal with WW is crazy.

If you go to Walmart and complain about not getting good service, or questionable service, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

OTHERWISE YOU, Y O U, ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

You are not HELPING in anyway shape, or form.

IF I could have found a S&W 15-22 at a LGS, I would have bought one.

Thanks for all of the brilliant insight.

Kittery Trading Post in Maine? or are there others?
I spent lots of time in the one in Maine as a child. I love that place. Don't know why you would be shopping there from Colorado though.

Shopping online.... been looking for a M&P 9, and nobody locally has had any inventory. Somebody told me about Kittery, so I checked it out. Just happened to notice that they had 15-22's in stock. :)

In this day and age it's not unreasonable to buy a firearm online and have it shipped to your FFL.
I was promoting the hell out of the Trading Post on the M&P15 section of this site because they were getting in Sports on a regular basis and had them for a good price. As a result, some people here now aware of who the Trading Post is.
They do have a lot of M&P 15-22's in stock so if you're in need then it may be worth looking into them.
FYI- I don't get anything out of this other than trying to help fellow shooters out.

Despite some of the comments made, it is actually a policy of Wal-Mart's. Not all background checks come back in a jiffy. In fact, I always have about a 2-3 day wait when I purchase a firearm, and the reason provided by S.L.E.D. is, because I have such a common first and last name. However, the potential purchaser could have a pending case. He or she may have a discrepancy on their record, etc etc... These special background checks can sometimes take up to 60 days. However, Wal-Mart will only hold a "delayed check" for 72 hours, and then they are forced to put back out on the market. They SHOULD HAVE pulled the weapon from the display to begin with though, so I understand your frustrations.

I walked into Wal-Mart on this past Monday. They had a DPMS AR-15 on display for $617. Now I had just dropped a pretty penny on a Colt M4, but this same rifle (DPMS) was selling at another major retail chain for $749, and online for $900. I'm no two-bit flipper, so I was never debating buying to re-sell, but for $617, I couldn't leave it there.I thought about my buddy. He's one of those guys who can't understand why one would pay $1400 for a Colt, when you can get (2) AR-15's? He is not into the bells and whistles, so I knew he could do me a favor and purchase it, so I didn't have to. LOL. Any who, he comes down to get the rifle, fills out all paper work, and his back ground check comes back "delayed". He is a squeaky clean fellow, and has never been in trouble a day in his life (with the law at least). Clerk says he can't sell it to him, and he doesn't why right now. My buddy said he knew exactly what it was. Last year, someone bought a house, and two cars in his name, 1/2 way across the country. The identity theft is what held him up. He was told if cleared, he would be contacted, but only good for 72 hours, and he could be delayed for weeks, who knows? The clerk then says, the good news is, I can't sell it for 72 hours, so I'M TAKING IT STRAIGHT BACK TO THE RIFLE LOCKER!

Sorry so long winded, but I truly understand your frustrations! I waited and waited to catch Wal-Mart's sweet $447 ticket, but ended up paying $489 at Academy... Since my purchase a few months ago, all I see at Wal-Mart now is a yellow tag that read $447, with a rifle sitting under it.... Just my luck...

I will say it's pretty jacked up that they didn't pull the firearm.

One of the benefits of a Connecticut carry permit is there is no waiting period. Doing the paperwork takes longer than getting a transaction number from CSP. 30 minutes and out the door is pretty much the norm.

As of 01 October, either a carry permit, or a purchase permit will be required for everything, pistols, long guns, magazines AND ammo.
