I'm blessed to work with two combat veterans . . . and retired military . . . who served in Vietnam. BOTH also earned Silver Stars too! How rare that is!!! One is the only Silver Star recipient in our county. The other one is the only one living in a nearby county.

I recently discovered our state now offers new tags for veterans who received specific awards for valor, or served in specific combat areas/campaigns, so I alerted them of these brand new Silver Star tags.

These tags are FREE (for life) to vets but of course you must bring your DD-214 and other documentation and then wait for the state to make you one. If you live in Georgia, check it out!

One of the guys immediately went out and ordered one and he had to come by to show it to me! SO RARE . . .

I took his photo with his special tag, and I consider both men as friends, as well as colleagues . . . truly super people, that few know what they went through. Heroes both too, who went through a lot of action.

Here's his new tag, so YOU can see one too . . . with specific numbers and letters blocked out to protect privacy of course.

I was honored to receive my USN - Vietnam War plate last year. Just before Christmas, I came up to a light that just turned green for my left turn onto a four-lane. I noticed a bunch of bikers stopped for the red light to my right.

I turned and proceeded to the right lane to begin my shifting through 6 gears in my Wrangler. About a mile down the road, I noticed them getting into the left lane to pass me. As they went by, they had their right hands raised in a salute.

Little things you will never forget.

About 25 years ago Colorado announced Purple Heart license plates. Applicants had to go to the county veterans service officer with DD214, complete a form and pay a small fee ($10.00 as I recall), then pay regular rates for the license plates.

About 11 years ago Colorado decided to make one set of plates free (no fee, no motor vehicle taxes, etc) for Purple Heart recipients. Later, additional vehicles could have the Purple Heart plates at regular licensing rates, so Purple Heart vets can have them on all of their vehicles.

Was awarded my first Purple Heart medal 45 years ago. For over 30 years that medal and a buck or two might be good for a cup of coffee somewhere (although the "really nice" places certainly did not cater to veterans or military personnel back in the 70's and 80's). I take the free set of license plates, and these days I sometimes receive a nice comment from time to time. But it isn't possible to forget the quarter of a century during which being a Vietnam veteran in America was not something you mentioned in "nice company", and we were generally ostracized by large segments of the public.

Most of us returning from Vietnam never stood in an awards ceremony, never had medals pinned onto our uniforms with a band playing. These things came in the mail, fancy blue boxes with a medal and ribbon, along with a printed citation and copies of the orders, sometimes a certificate auto-penned by a president, secretary of defense, or some other official at a desk in DC.

OK, maybe just a little bitterness. I'll stop now.

Oklahoma Military License Plates

Military Plates

Oklahoma has it fair share of military license plates. I found these the most striking.

Looking at that bottom license plate reminds me that we are losing approximately 550 WWII Veterans per day. There are approximately 1.2 million veterans remaining of the 16 million who served our nation in World War II. The last WWI Veteran died at the age of 110. If that were to be repeated, the last World War II veteran would die about 2038.

Ive seen two lovcally for those who had the DSC. One of these two gents loves eating the buffett at a local pizza hut and is rare he isnt there on any given day. I had the pleasure of having lunch with him along with sarge Bill.I paid for their lunch that day.

In Ma, we have free plates marked as follows:

Bronze Star
Silver Star
Medal of Honor
Purple Heart
Disabled Veteran

If we don't qualify for the above, there is also a plate marked 'Veteran' which we have to pay a premium for. It can have a flag or a 'disk' insignia of your branch of service on it.

Under the flag or insignia you can have the time period you served in. eg

Desert Storm
Vietnam
Korea, etc

There is one for each period of 'conflict'.

I haven't yet figured why the 'regular' Vet has to pay a premium for his plate.

Almost every one I met with an important Military Award goes a long way to hide it and never outs themselves. It is usually a third party that finds out and mentions it. Being good folks they will not deny it but generally say "it was a long time ago" or "I was just doing what anyone else would have". I can't imagine one of the few I know wanting it advertised.
