About 3 months ago I found out that I was experiencing kidney failure and today I found out that Age Related or Dry Macular Degeneration had begun. The Dr. said that the only thing that could be done was to start on medication that might slow it or in the best instance could keep it from getting acute. Started it today.
Has anyone experienced this or knows someone who has? Any info would be appreciated.
I have a 6906 that I have not yet shot and a bunch of target ammo. Going to have to correct that situation soon.

I was diagnosed with wet macular degeneration at the ripe old age of 31. My WMD also caused/is related to retinal pigment epithelium detachment. Retinal PED is the loss of pigment cells of the retina caused by leaking blood vessels in the retina. We all know that blood is corrosive to blued steel. Well it turns out it is also corrosive to your pigment and will cause loss of pigment if left on for exteme extended periods of time. With the loss of pigment in the retina you vision darkens and becomes "Fuzzy" as there is less pigment on the retina for the light entering the pupil to reflect off of. The treatment that I was prescribed was MASSIVE doses of Prednisone, 200 mg day 1, 190 mg day 3, 180 mg day 5, etc until down to 10 mg on the last day, then start over. Along with the Prednisone I took 1000 mg doses of Naprosyn daily and MASSIVE doses of lutein (an OTC suppliment). All the Predinose did was cause me to have a REALLY BAD ATTITUDE (Roid Rage) for several years (had to go unarmed during this time for everone elses safety). The Naprosyn caused severe stomach/intestinal distress and I kept Mr. Whipple in business while taking the Naprosyn. Today, seventeen years from onset and my vision has deteriorated to the point of left eye 20/200 and right eye 20/50, non correctable. I've had lazer surgery eight times to deal with leaking blood vessels and all the lazer surgery has accomplished is a blind spot every place the lazer was fired. During the first 10 years of treatment I was at the Dr's. office about every 3 months. Year 11 I was told I had stabilized and to come back once a year for a re-check. All this boils down to is that there is no real cure for WMD, DMD or PED, only treatment to slow the progress. Some of the solutions I have found for dealing with DMD, WMD, PED: When shooting it is much easier to use a scope than open sights as the crosshairs and the target are on the same focal plane. If you like to read get one of the ebook readers that will allow you to adjust the point size of the text and brightness of the screen. Buy the largest monitor that will fit on your desk (I use a 24" and have the point size dialed WAY up). The main problems it has caused me is limiting my night time driving and not being able to focus well on the front sight when shooting open sights. BTW I now wear non presciption "Cokes" that I have made up at a local optics shop. Since they don't have any correction I do not need a prescription. They are more magnifying glasses than reading glasses.

Sorry to hear this ancient-one. I don't have any of the info you seek, but please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Lets hope that you can keep this thing at bay.

I've had vision loss twice in my life, and it was a bummer
waiting to find out if it'd come back. That lack of vision may
be why I didn't see the divorce coming, too. Sure hope the meds help.
I've gotten to where I expect something else to go bad, on a daily
basis. In the meantime, I can still enjoy a good S&W. TACC1
