i have a chance to purchase this gun at what i think is a fairly decent price being that it is fireable but i have no idea what kind it is the owner said its a S&W/H&R Co. .38 he said it fires and besides the blueing being gone on most of the gun its not terrible the only picture he has is pretty bad and he says its from the late 1800s im pretty sure its newer than that im thinking 20s or 30s what do you think its worth any help would be greatly appreciated

If the "decent price" is about $50 or less, and it seems to work, I'd say buy it if it appeals to you. But it is not an S&W revolver, but a Harrington & Richardson. H&R is one of a number of producers of "budget" quality handguns from the late 19th Century forward. They can be worth something if in top condition, but are of little value in the condition you describe. Variations in H&R revolvers are legion.

What the owner is saying is" It is a Harrington & Richardson revolver chambered in .38 S&W caliber. Now, that is NOT the same as .38 Special.

Welcome to the Forum - I think you're going to like it here. Very good input from others, and as you have indicated you are not buying the revolver, I won't add anything except to state the obvious: the seller, in this case, is not your friend.

I'd pay more for a box of ammo than for that gun. Your mileage may vary.
