: Gun Hoarder

You may have heard on the news about a southern California man that was put under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found that he owned 100 guns and allegedly had (by rough estimate) 1 million rounds of ammunition stored in his home. The house also featured a secret escape tunnel.

My favorite quote from the dimwit television reporter: "Wow! He has .... about a million machine gun bullets." The headline referred to it as a "massive weapons cache." BTW, I am dubious about the pile of ammunition boxes and cans that they showed. It looked big enough to contain no more than about 100,000 rounds, unless there was a lot of .22 rimfire ammo.

However, by southern California standards, even someone owning 100,000 rounds would be called "mentally unstable."Just imagine if he lived elsewhere:

In Arizona , . . . he'd be called "an avid gun collector."

In Texas , . .. . he'd be called "a novice gun collector."

In Utah , . .. .he'd be called "moderately well prepared," but they'd probably reserve judgment until they made sure that he had a corresponding quantity of stored food.

In Montana , . .. .he'd be called "The neighborhood 'Go-To' guy."

In Idaho , . . . he'd be called "a likely gubernatorial candidate."

In Washington ……He'd be a "retired Policeman"

And, in Wyoming , . . . he'd be called "an eligible bachelor."

I hate slow news days! I have to hope that there is more to the story. What would they say about 200 cameras and a freezer full of film?

In Georgia they would say, " 'at ol' boy's got a heap of guns 'n bullets, ain't he? Dang near's many as me and Miss Sally's got."

My wife knits. I can not even estimate how much yarn she has stockpiled for current and future projects. No difference for people who own and shoot firearms. I have friends in the gun club who stock enough ammo for a season of matches and practice. And there are some who stock enough for more than one season. They are just fine people who understand the wisdom of buying in quantity by lot numbers, etc.

1 million rounds of ammunition -- a reasonable start. The first step in proper preparation. Thats 200 cases of 22 LR. That's aboout what our National Debt is increasing every millisecond. You just got to start some place.

I highly doubt he had "1 million rounds" of ammo......the media never lets the truth stand in the way of a good headline.

100 guns is no big deal, a good many of us I'm sure have more than 100 firearms. Heck there are some of us that probably have 100 guns just in their J-frame collection.

Jay Leno has hundreds of cars in his collection and no one's locking him up.........but you have 100 guns and you're a "psycho".......it's a shame that you can't collect fine firearms without being "labeled". Some people have basements full of coins and stamps, militaria, swords, vintage fishing poles, and they're an "avid hobbyist", no one is afraid to discuss coin collecting at work. At my job I don't even tell anyone I have guns, heaven forbid someone find out I'm a gun collector, I'll be a "psychopath". They're just objects, just like people who collect minitiare engines, but the objects we collect have a stigma attached to them.

Who counted the ammo? The accounting firm of Delloite and Toushe? Sounds like home....except I haven't got around to digging an escape tunnel....yet.:D

Well said, Stantheman... I don't discuss my gun collecting with many people, either, who needs the 'stigma' that so many place on our hobby... Sad that someone's ignorance/fear has to be so negatively put on to others.

I call a million rounds a goal.

I started reloading 2 years ago. I've slowed down a little but they'd evacuate bricks if they saw my "hoarde." Like most, when I start a new hobby I go just a bit overboard.;)

And yeah... if you count the .22LR I guess the number would be pretty shocking to some.

I have no where near 1 million rounds of ammo on hand, but I think I could outfit the entire neighborhood with arms and ammunition in the event of an attack, and last quite awhile. I won't comment on the amount of firearms because I don't want to be targeted by thieves. I wonder what "those people" would think as I have "several" guns strategically places throughout the house. I don't think I'm ever more than 10-12 ft. from one. In our group, we usually don't discuss how many guns we have, just the same as we don't discuss what our salaries are, I usually just respond " a sufficient number" .

My Doctor loves golf. He can't play worth a *&^% and he has a collection of over 100 putters and a million+ dollars stored away in a locked room (the bank). Does he qualify for the 'exam'?

sadly, the people who have never had the privilege of owning, or even handling or shooting A gun are also the people who watch this X%$* without scrutiny, and believe it without debate, and guess what, they VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!

that, to me, is more scary than 100 guns sitting in a room.......

The guys at my gun club were discussing such a news report one time where some on-air bimbo was breathlessly reporting on some guy the cops were interviewing, and she shared that his house was said to have contained "7 long guns, at least 5 handguns, and 'several hundred rounds' of ammunition."

The general consensus at the club was this poor sap was just getting started collecting and he was about out of ammo . . . .
We have a different view of such 'roun heah . . .
