I'm setting up my new Cannon (from Costco) safe in the basement. Never had a drop of water in the basement in over 25 yrs so I'm not worried about that - still, it gets pretty humid around here in the summer. I bought a goldenrod dehumidifier and it's plugged in and working.

Normally I keep some of my pistols & revolvers in their own case so I can grab them for the range. Now I'm thinking it might be better to take them out of the cases while in the safe so the air in the can circulate around them - maybe use a rack.

Any thoughts one way or another or am I worrying too much?

BTW, the safe is great (EX20) for under $600 delivered.

I don't leave any guns in the case when they are stored in my safe.

:) I keep my S&W's in the card board box they come in. I also have the S&W anti rust paper around them. The guns that come in a plastic box I keep the guns stored out in the open. I think you just don't want to trap moisture in a box. Don

I keep mine in the nightstand, 1 in each of 4 closets, office drawer, china cabinet, hallway closet, downstairs office, basement studio, 5th bedroom (storage room), garage, glove boxes in cars 1,2,3 and 4, under the seat of the Jeep, one in the shed, one in the filing cabinet and one in a drawer where I keep copies of important broker acct stuff.

Works for me and I always have one nearby in case some loony decides they want to try to cause trouble 'round here.

I have all mine out in the open when in the safe. It's nice to see all the girls when the door is open and the lights come on! ;)

It's an old Browning Pro Safe (60"x24"x30").1 Goldenrod for the last 19 years. Of those 19 years, the last 3 years I've had 2. I believe they are the 18" version. Placed in the bottom.

Same as others have said. Dry basement but run a dehumidifier this time of year. Stays around 70 to 72 degrees F at 46% to 50% humidity in the safe. No problems whatsoever.

Then there are the "few" that never see the safe!

I keep all my guns in individual Doskocil gun cases.

Before putting them in the new gun cases, I take a
shaving brush and liberally coat the insides of the case with CLP preservative.

I have stored my guns this way for years and never, ever had any rust or problems.

Plus, I like the fact that each gun is protected if something falls or they get shifted around.

I guess to each his own.

I keep all my handguns in a rack on the shelf. I do keep a few of my better long guns in gun socks to protect from dings and scratches in the close quarters. I clean and oil all of them 3-4 times a year whether I shoot them on not, so humidity is a non-issue with me, though I really need a bigger safe.

I keep mine in Boyt rugs.No problems.Not even a Goldenrod,just a few dissicant cans.

Small safe, many firearms, long and short. I keep the pistols in rugs and stack them vertically between the rifles, sort of like padded buffers.

Been like this over 20 years. I clean my guns every time I use them before I put them away. Oil the bore, light coat of oil on the frame. Never a lick of rust.

There is one loaded .45acp in the safe, not in a rug. Unless you know it's there, it isn't visable.

I know where it is. :)

I use Sack-Ups Sack-Ups Gunsack Pistol Silicone-Treated Cotton Blend 13-1/2" - MidwayUSA
They have a label that you can use for quick identification.

They are Silicone treated and protect from moisture and keep the guns from coming in contact with each other. I also have them for rifles. Cabala's and Bass-Pro sell a similar product.

Same here. It does get hot & humid here on the north-eastern seaboard. I keep most of my guns in Sock-Ups and some handguns in padded butterfly-type pistol cases. Good old fashioned Silicone spray is wonderful as it repells water vapor. If ya liberally spray the material with silicone , it can't absorb any moisture. I respray , soak actually , my Sock-Ups and the insides of the pistol rugs every so often. Never had any corrosion.

What did you say your address was? ;)

You'll probably be OK, but I would take them out and put them in a rack, if you have room.

I would also get that safe up off the floor, if you haven't. The floor is a heat sink that transfers temp changes to the steel in your safe - unless you floor happens to be insulated. I would set it on some rigid insulation. If you use the 2-inch stuff, not only do you get a nice thermal barrier, but also, if you ever have a little water on your floor (burst pipe or other leaky plumbing) your safe isn't sitting in the water.

Also wouldn't hurt to run a dehumidifier in your gun room. I was amazed at how much water I haul out of the two dehumidifiers in my basement during the summertime.

I set my safe on hockey pucks, got that tip from an oldtime safe mover.

Bore-Stores. Silicone treated like the sack-ups, nice and thick to prevent damage, shaped like a full flap holster with velcro closure.
