FWIW, as I understand the law in Texas, you can only carry a weapon in your car without a CCW license if you are traveling. It seems that every jurisdiction has a different definition of traveling. Going to work or shopping in a different county might count in some places, but not in other places. I have no problems with it as I live in Oklahoma, so I'm pretty much assured traveling status when in Texas.![]()
That's correct. You must be a traveler to carry
in the car in TX. And that has to be across
counties other than the one you live in.
I can't carry one in the car traveling around
town, or in my county. You will go to jail if
they catch you. But if I'm on the highway, it's
ok. One thing.. It is up to the discretion of
the officer to some extent. Most can tell a
legit traveler, vs someone prowling around up
to no good.
I wish Oklahoma had the same rule. That way
I could carry one in the car the whole way
up to my place in OK.
But.. They don't, so I don't carry mine in the
car at all, even while I'm in TX.
I don't want to have to stop at the state line
to put away my pistol.
So I keep mine locked in the trunk with the
ammo up front in the glovebox or wherever.
I really oughta get me a concealed permit.
That would let me carry in both states no
matter where I'm at.
If I did carry in the car, I'd probably use my
center console rather than the glovebox, and
if I were to get pulled over, the first words
out of my mouth would be I have a pistol in
the console.
When I have them locked in the trunk, I don't
volunteer that I have weapons. I would wait
until they asked me. They will soon enough.
I've pretty much decided not to carry in the car
until I have a permit. Even if I stay in TX the
whole trip.
