Need more efficient storage in safe. Pistols are currently stored on their side on a carpeted shelf... I'm thinking a padded rack, just a rod into the muzzle. Any such out there?

Yes. I'll look it up and send you a link shortly. It's basically a rack that holds 6 guns, 3 on bottom 3 on top with the coat hanger type wire down the barrel. There's another option I've seen, too. It's a block with gun shaped cubby holes cut into it and carpeted, with the gun vertical, grip facing out. I know I've seen one of the two in the NRA store online, so I'll start my digging

At midwayusa.com, this is the lockdown brand gun rack that holds 6 guns, for $20

I typed in "handgun rack for safe" in Google, and found a whole bunch of products that fit your description. They all appeared between $20 and $50, so you should find what you're looking for

I bought some plastic coated wire racks for pot lids at Walmart and they work well and were cheap. Can be used as is for automatics laid in slide down. Tie wrapped a plastic tube at the rear of one of the racks for longer barreled revolvers and they set butt down in the rack.

I have been considering a new storage method as well,
Im currenty using the padded cases but seems a wood plank with
staggered horizontaly aligned dowels for the bores will be more efficient,
Dont want metal to metal contact as Im afraid of corrosion ,
Cant really see a way around metal rods for small bore guns , may have to cover them in heat shrink plastic.

I've had good luck heat shrinking wires... thanks for the idea. Still thinking... (and you thought that smell was an old tire burning)

Manabout Racks - highly recommended

I have several of these to store my pistols/revolvers in. Custom and scaleable to your needs and safe size.

I have guns ranging from 2" J frames to 5" 4506 stored in these. Works very effectively.

I discovered these on this site some time back - there should be some older threads about them.
