Dear Smith and Wesson Forum, I have a gun range question.
are police department ranges open to the public or can they only be used by the police officers? sincerely and respectfully mg357 a proud member of the Smith and Wesson Forum

Depends on the range. Some PD ranges are 100% PD use only. I've seem a few that were open to the public on the weekends. I've seem a couple PD's that used a public range. In a small town it may just depend on who you know!

Our state of the art Sheriff firing range is open to the public on certain days. One day during the week and I think Saturday for a few hours. You must take a Sheriff gun safety class before you are allowed to shoot. You also must buy your lead free frangible ammo at the range.

And then you have a range like one of the ranges I shoot at. The range is owned by Tennesse Wildlife Resources Agency (Game Warden people, aka GUBMINT). It is open to the puplic Tue, Wed, Thur and Sat and open to the local PD on Sun, Mon and Fri. BTW, it is one of the best operated indoor ranges in the Memphis area. There is always at least one RSO in the range area anytime there is an active shooter on the firing line.
