Gun Rugs

I've stored blued guns in rugs and still do with no problems at all.
Now, when I say "store".....I'm meaning only no more than several days at the most until they come out for an oil spray & wipe down if they are not being shot. I also have given my gun rugs a spray inside with Rem-oil.

I think folks can run into rust issues only if the gun is put away DRY and the rug zipped up for a year or more.....THEN you might have problems.

Depends a lot on where you live. I live on the east coast of FL a few miles from the ocean and the salt air. A relative bought a new model 66 and stored it in a gun rug, the old style with shag rug interior, for several years and the stainless got pitted pretty bad, but this particular area is known to have some the worst corrosion from the enviroment in the U.S. Some of the newer rugs have a fabric interior instead of the shag, you may want to consider that.

Well thanks for all the advice. I'm not sure if I should keep it in rug now or not. Apparently, an eye must be kept on it and is meant only to be put in for a short time and taking it to the range. I guess I will just keep it an oily old T-shirt and do what I always do. Thanks again. TJ

I agree that the degree of risk depends totally on the climate. If you lived in the Sahara, you could probably wrap your oiled gun in a wet dish cloth, pack it up in fleece pile, and it would be fine for decades. The essential factor is will the gun rug draw moisture or won't it?

Where I live, in northern Vermont (quite a dry climate indoors, esp. in winter), I have had no problems at all storing my guns in Allen gun rugs and in Bore Stores for many years.

FWIW, I used to use rugs but found some will hold moisture. I've found the the 9x12 hard plastic cases by Doksil work best (if you have the space). They stack/store better , allow zero movement of the gun/ mags stored together and hold no moisture. I've been using this system to store my entire S&W collection for 20 years now with no complaints.
Food for thought anyway.

this may sound like a silly question. I know you can buy wax paper online like what comes with new gun purchases but couldn't you just use plain jane Reynolds wax paper found at walmart? wax is wax right? anybody ever wrapped with this, then slipped in rug?

then again some of you guys are putting in plastic bags so couldn't you also wrap in freezer wrap? if so what side would touch the gun? plastic or paper?

It's not wax paper. It's VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) paper. It is made to wrap metal objects for storage and shipment and contains chemicals that inhibit rust and corrosion. You can buy sheets of it at Brownell's or buy it by the roll at Uline.com.
