Gun safe

I am asking because a need another safe. If you were buying a new safe that would hold about 36 long guns and a few handguns, what brand would you buy? Is there really any difference between brands?

All I require is the space, be fire resistent for 30 minutes or so, be water proof and have a secure locking system.

I have two safes now but they are full to the brim. I priced Cannons, Browning and some others. One sports outlet has one on sale for $799 with all the features offered on a $1400 Browning but I wonder about where the difference in price is. My current safes are off brands and over 15 yrs old. They still serve their purpose but a lot heavier than those on the market today.

Gun safes are usually" get what you pay for", but there are small differences between price ranges. I have a Cannon, because it was on sale, and available. There are much better safes and fire ratings, but it was good for the money. To answer your question, my next safe will/would be a 'Strong Built". I've not checked their website yet. I have two Zanotti Armor safes. They are actually 6 separate pieces that are held together with L shaped bolts. You'd swear they were welded. Mine hold 32 long guns and they have a shelf and handguns can be hung on the door. I bought them over 10 years ago and they were about $1200 at the time. They are excellent safes made in Cedar Falls Iowa.

We had to buy a new one when we moved because we left our other one at our last home; we had long since outgrown it anyway. My husband always does hours and hours of research before we make big purchases and this is what he chose.

It has an hour fire rating at 1400 degrees and is 72" tall with inside lighting and outlet for a dehumidifier. About $1,800 at the local hardware store (German Shepherd security not included.)

After many of these threads I still don't remember anybody posting that they hate their (insert brand here) safe. I haven't seen one without a S&G lock in ages so no difference there. I'm thinking it really doesn't matter much what you buy if you live in an area with relatively quick police and fire response times. All by your lonesome or out in the boonies is a whole different deal.

Question for those with the big floor safes...do you bolt them into the concrete foundation, or leave them freestanding on the assumption that a thief isn't going to be able to carry them away?

I live in an upper scale community of a small town with a horribly low crime rate. The local police spend their time either writing traffic tickets or watching tv at some residents home. The area has had one homicide in the last 20 years and two home burglaries and three business robberies.

My need for gun safes is because I do not want to be the next one that get robbed. With my luck, I would be the first home invasion in the history of the town. Past that, I have a lot of people coming to visit with kids. The guns needs to be well secured.

About 10 yrs ago I was approached by a business man that was running for mayor of the town. He asked if I would take the job of police chief when he got elected and I said yes. I moved into the town and then he got out of the race. But I remained here because it is very peaceful. But I cannot be assured of any thing and good safes will protect from more than just robbery.

I haven't bolted mind down because there's in floor heat, with my luck I'd hit the tubing with the hammer drill and cause a leak. I bought what the nearby sporting goods store had on sale - Stack-On Elite Fire Resistant Convertible Safe. It seemed like a good value at the time although I could have made a more well informed decision. The fire rating is only 30 minutes @ 1400 but at least my meger collection is safer and more secure than when it was stored in a closet...

I figure any safe is better than none. A wealthy friend of mine living in the northeast bought a vault from a bank that was being torn down. He paid for a crane to load it on a semi, bring it to his house and set it in his yard. He hired a contractor to build a concrete foundation onto his house and made a room for the vault. Now he has a walk in safe that is a room for his family to retreat in the event of tornado or such.

I cannot afford such but will settle for another safe that costs less than those I have now. The way I look at it, the price of a safe is like buying a couple of nice guns. It is a difficult decision as to buy more guns or another safe. Maybe more practical to buy a safe.

But the words of others here are correct. BOLT any safe down. A good dolly will carry one off and into a truck. Mine is well bolted and so will be the next one.

Or, you can do what one guy did. He's a contractor.

So, when one of his sons moved out, he turned the entire room into a large gun vault.

Since it is a hollow tile house, he tiled all the windows, added Air conditioning and dehumidifier.

He also got a full sized safe door and installed that. The door is just an oversized gun safe door.

He does have other home security.

Just a suggestion.

Something I'm planning when I can afford to redo the house.
