Have been on the forum for a short while after a 35 yr absence from shooting. I have a couple of guns that I am going to sell and know nothing about the legalities of selling them. I have read the rules by LJ about listing them on the site, but my questions lie in shipping the guns. When the buyer gives me the FFL that I'm shipping to, should I get more than their company name, FFL license no and address ? Does it make a difference what state they're in ? Is there anything else I need to know about the transaction as it relates to state laws, shipping and FFL that's going to handle the transfer ?
Thanks in advance,
Ed

if you go to a FFL to handle the shipping, they will do it right.

You drop off the gun, show your ID, pay their fee and then go home!

In Florida, you can sell face to face to a resident of Florida with proper ID. I would make a copy of his ID for your records. For private transactions, the individual must be at least 18 years old for handguns and rifles and free of prohibitions from buying a firearm. You would have to ask him or her and if that individual would have any prohibitions that would void the transaction of the firearm sale. This way it frees you from the responsibility of the sale. You can list the firearm in the St. Pete times classified under sporting goods. Again, the same rules apply to the FTF sale. You can list it on the forum and the transaction would have to be completed by a FFL. If the buyer agrees with the transaction, you can mail the firearm to a FFL dealer of his choosing and I would include the shipping cost to the FFL. The fees could range from ten dollars to twenty five dollars. If you have further questions, send me a PM and I would be happy to assist you.

There's no requirement on your end to use an FFL to ship the gun, only that if shipping out of state that it must be received by an FFL, however some uneducated/paranoid FFLs won't give out a copy of their FFL or just plain refuse to receive firearms from a non-FFL. Also if you're shipping to a resident of your same state then there's no requirement that the gun go to an FFL (in most states), you can ship it directly to the buyer same as a face to face sale. Could be cheaper to ship yourself or not, it depends on what your FFL charges. If you're shipping it yourself, get the copy of the recipient's FFL, check the number via the ATF's FFL verification site - https://www.atfonline.gov/fflezcheck/ and ship it to the verified address using FedEx/UPS (note that they may deny insurance in the event of damage or loss if shipped any way other than Next Day Air even though it's not a legal requirement) if it's a handgun (it's illegal to ship a handgun via USPS) or USPS if it's a long gun. Pack it well in a box that doesn't identify it as a gun, pre-print the shipping label and drop it off at the shipping facility.
