gun show find... 4" 617 no dash

Did you leave out the 22-rifles, or just don't have any?:D

Hey....I have located a 317 "parts kit"....wonder if it's worth $150? It has, everything but the frame. I have two 317 no-locks as well.

One of the early non underlug 617's. Came with Combats as pictured. They also made a few hundred in 6" would LOVE to find one.

Been looking for a nice4" M 617 with box etc...tough to find.

17-3, 18-3, 317, 34-1, 63, DW22(ugh), +lever, bolt, pump rifles and I probably still want a 43c and SP101( old6 shot). Colts are way out of my league, much too pricey.

there was one on gunbroker last week...i bid on it up to $1200...it sold for $1225. :( LNIB with all papers etc.

wont see another like that for awhile

Frank237, i really like your no-underlug.

This has been a K22 year for me because these are the only Smiths i have bought or traded for all year. wasn't really looking hard to find these 22s, just lucked into them. and they were all great deals.
both 5 screws are 1953. I got the 6" 617 just 2 months ago...for 75 cents less than the 4"

my only other 22s are a Mark II, and a stainless Marlin 60

440,

Beautiful pair on the LEFT!! I'm very partial to the early guns. I think you did pretty good.

New to the S&W Forum and need a little help. Just acquired a Mod. 617. The revolver is not marked "Smith & Wesson" on the barrel and has very faint impressions of the S&W insignia and other markings. It is nickel plated or satin stainless and has "1 of 200 sets" etched below the cylinder. I have heard that if the barrel is not marked Smith and Wesson on the barrel it is NOT a Smith. Does anyone know if there are any exceptions to this? I have several other Smiths and they all have the proper markings. This revolver has the factory S&W grips and appears to be a Smith in every other way.

Welcome to the Forum. I'll try to help with your inquiry but there are others far more knowledgeable than me.

I am assuming from your mention that the gun might be nickel-plated that someone had it buffed and in the process, the rollmarkings were partially or completely buffed off.

Thanks Ed. I would bet you are right. Wish I would have thought of that before I bought it. The gun has a 6 inch barrel, looks great, shoots great and is an early model. If I could figure out how to attach a photo I would include one. Thanks again.

that particular pair has some very nice grain..they look good on yours. did that stainless rear sight come off an early 66, or something similar??

Thanks , GA Targets are my favorite as I have long fingers.
Is it the shape of the combats that you dont like?

BTW, You have a very good eye as that is an old SS rear site,
bought it at a show so dont know its history but the only guns
I know of that had a SS rear site were the early Model 66/67.

Seeing the early 617 no lug is motivating me to make a 617 with a Model 66 style underlug by removing the extra metal from a factory barrel..

There are -2's with stainless cylinders. Purely from a shooting standpoint, the Hogue's are some of the best grips I've ever put my hands on. I thought about putting some round to square Eagle "retrogrips" on my 617, but liked the Hogues enough to go with their checkered monogrip in Goncalo Alves.
