It has been quite some time since I took in a gun show. I need some update on the protocol. Is it alright for someone attending a gun show to bring in a handgun (unloaded) for the purpose of possibly working out a trade with either a vendor or another attendee?

Is it legal for an attendee to make a FTF sale to another attendee? If so, is this a common occurrence or would it be highly unlikely?

All the gun shows I have attended here in Central Florida require the gun to be checked and have a zip tie placed on the firearm to prevent it from being loaded. I have also bought and sold firearms with vendors and attendees. It is very common at the shows I attend. I would check state laws in TN.

In Tennessee private sales between individuals is perfectly legal. You can sell or trade as you like.
The gun will be checked and tied when you come in the door.
Going to the Memphis show? Whatcha got? I might be interested.

That's the show I had in mind. Per discussion with my wife it probably will not happen.

Too many guns starts with a low number around here. I have an LCP coming so I thought I might get rid of something. I have a 66-1, 2 1/2" stainless that I was thinking of selling. I have had it for twenty years and never fired it.

The only state in the South that is...backward over the whole deal is North Carolina.

Even FTF private sales of handguns must have a background check done at the Sheriff's department.

Of course, you can get these slips in quantities of five at a time.

Of course, you can't sell a handgun to an out of state resident even FTF at a show.

FYI, I believe the sale would have to be to a resident of your state. Just ask to see his driver’s license, that’s good enough. I’ve done several sales this way in Oregon.

There are three things in life a guy just does...no matter what. Hunt, fish and go to gun shows.

+1 every year we have been together I have taken my wife to Tulsa. Saturday is usually alright as she can go shopping or swim in the hotel pool, etc. We usually have a good dinner.
Sunday is a different story. We have to check out of the hotel and she'll come with to the show. She is through 30min.s after walking in and will not let up til we leave.
I finally told her this year I didnt care what she did...but she wasnt going to Tulsa. This is my weekend and I'll make up for it later.

My rule for selling FTF. Copy info off of the buyers DL or HCP, name, address, DL/HCP #, DOB , etc. PERSONALLY COPY THIS INFO, DO NOT LET THE BUYER TELL YOU THE INFO. My reason for this rule: I sold a Model 66 fifteen years ago at one of the gun shows in Memphis in a FTF transaction. I knew the person that I sold it to. His house was broken into about ten years ago and the revolver I sold him was taken. To make a long story short the MPD called me and asked that I come down and talk with them about a gun that I purchased and was later recovered at a crime scene. Nothing wrong with FTF in Tennessee, as long as the buyer is not prohibited from owning. As a personal rule I always get the buyers personal info and record it in my own version of a bound book showing the above mentioned buyers info along with the manufacturer/importer, model, serial number, finish and barrel length of the firearm. If the buyer won't/can't provide ID I will not do the sale. Know who you are selling to and put the info in a safe place. Have fun at the Ag Center this weekend, I know I will.
