Gun Stories hosted by Joe Mantegna debuted on the Outdoor Channel last night. Regular time will be 7:30 pm Eastern (rerun at 10:30 pm). If you missed the first episode on the 1911, it will rerun on July 3rd 6 am.

Quite a bit of it was filmed here with the NRA National Firearms Museum Petersen Gallery as a backdrop, and I got to join such luminaries as our own Phil Schreier, Ted Nugent, Am. Rifleman Editor Mark Keefe, noted author Stephen Hunter (Point of Impact, iSniper, etc.), Gunsite head Buz Mills, Lance Olson, and others as one of the talking heads between shots (literally "between shots").

And there will be some Smiths in a future episode.

If you've seen it (I haven't coz I don't get the channel), I'd like to get your thoughts on the series.

Thanks -- Jim

I was thinking of starting a thread on this very subject.

The only regular TV I watch is Midway USA's Wednesday Night at the The Range on Outdoor Channel. Tuned in last night and was very pleased to find this new show in the lineup -- heck, I watched it twice!

Well written, quite attractively filmed, and comprehensive in the storytelling. I very much look forward to future episodes.

I watched that and thought it was pretty good, but there were a couple of things I noticed...when they were talking about the differences between the 1911 and the 1911A1, they were showing a modern production pistol with Novak type sights and other custom touches rather than an actual 1911A1. And some of the comments made by the "experts" were a bit of a stretch...like the gentleman that said a hit in the pinky finger with a .45 would spin the guy around three times before he dropped, etc. Other than that, an interesting and well done show IMO.

I found the debute 1911 episode outstanding. Very well scripted and edited. The fact that the 1911 pistol has barely changed over 100 years and is more popular today than ever is an amazing fact of history. From the Wright Brothers' first flight to modern jet aircraft, but we're still shooting the same gun from 100 years ago!

I look forward to other episodes. If you're looking for suggestions to improve, I have very little.

However, I would love to have seen a "collector" in addition to the photos of "collections" of 1911 pistols. I want to see and hear the enthusiasm of a collector who specializes in 1911s and can recount all of the tedious small differences. I just want to see some major bubblying enthusiasm in addition to the reserved factual comments.

I want to see some guy all giddy say, "I have spent my adult life collecting every variation of the model blah blah blah and I'm still not done yet!"

Gun Stories

Gun writer, Frank James who was on this, is from IN. and shoots IDPA at our club and used to shoot with us in Winamc, In. Nice guy. Loves 41 mags.

I get enough of that on the internet. And besides, they keep banning me from their website! :D

Tha's my buddy Phil what said that! (and if it's any consolation, he spins around 3 times when he slams his pinky in his desk drawer too.....)

He never met a colorful analogy he didn't like. Actually a fantastic story teller because of it --- YouTube - ‪Girandoni air rifle as used by Lewis and Clark. A National Firearms Museum Treasure Gun.‬‏

"hit in pinky finger and and spin around three times" I took it that he was telling that as a joke and not a fact. I liked the show and am looking forward to next week. Larry

Last night I tried to find the show in the listings to TiVo it, but couldn't find it with a search. The actual title is "Midaway USA's Gun Stories". I did manage to record the encore at 3 am today and have set it up to record the upcoming episodes.

He did it again.
He said the Spanish were using 1893 Mausers in 7mm Remington against the Rough Riders on San Juan Hill.
Huh???

I've got like 15 posts on the 1911 forum with the moderator out of Greece, and already have been severely reprimanded. Some guy was talking junk about Smith and Wesson for their misguidance during the Bill Clinton era and expounding his love for all things Springfield Armory. I just had to point out that Smith still makes theirs in the USA, and that his wonderful Springfield is a cast replica of a real 1911 made in some South American country. They didn't like that too much. The truth hurts I guess.
