Guns of Rio Bravo

I believe that Colt made a very small number of custom double rifles. Very rare, and very expensive.

BTW, was there anyonen cooler than Dino? He wasn't really cut out for westerns and was a bit miscast, but he sure made them fun...

They made the movie with John Wayne, Dino and Ricky Nelson. I wonder why only a few years later they did it again with James Caan, and Robert Mitchum?

I wonder if Colt actually made them or imported them from England with their name on them. Obviously Colt would not have made the barrels because they didn't have the ability.

Great Hollywood western. 19 year old Ricky Nelson does pretty good with allthese old pros. I love the way his two gun rig looks like it's wearing him instead of the other way around. And his role and the musical interlude was to bring in the teenage chicks.

Don't forget Stumpy, aka Walter Brennan!

I think Dean made a great cowboy. He did well in this one, The Sons of Katie Elder and Bandelero
Edit to add: Forgot one of my favorites - 5 Card Stud.

Colt had been in the gun business for about 50 years. They made rifles, pistols, and during the war had made revolving shotguns. Why did the "obviously not have the ability" to make doubles?

How very topical for me.

In Columbus, the CAPA Summer Movie Series is showing Rio Bravo on June 16th and 17th. They play old movies on the big screen at The Ohio Theater which is a restored Loews theater from the 1920s, downtown across from the Ohio State House. Holds 2700+ people and it is very beautiful. It is an amazing place to watch a movie. Ohio Theatre

Can't beat the price either a strip of 10 tickets for $25 or 2.50 each. plus they throw in period correct cartoons and coming attractions. If you show up 1/2 hour early they have a mini organ recital on the famous Morton Theater Organ.

Now that sounds like a great way to spend an evening. Can't beat a good movie at a proper theater, especially at that price.

I did not say Colt did not have the ability to make a SXS shotgun, I said they did not have the ability to make the barrels. NO American company had the ability to make a Damascus shotgun barrel. I think Dan LeFever claimed to have successfully made some Damascus shotgun barrels, but most collectors are skeptical of this claim.

It's also true that some companies that did not specialize in shotguns, like Colt, were known to have English makers do the actual production and sell the item under their own name. It's possible Colt did the actual production, but also possible they did not. I was wondering if anyone here knew for sure.

Colt actually made(or marketed) any number of shotguns. Ranging from percussian revolver shotguns, to semi-autos.

I own a Colt 1879 hammer-double. It's intact, and could be fired...but has Damascus barrels..and I don't want to damage a family heirloom!

They were finely made guns in the day. If I recall, used imported barrel blanks, and were available in different grades. Designed to compete with other better grade doubles on the market then.

Owning the real-deal, and looking over the replica's available now....the new stocks don't look anything like the original Colt's. The metal looks really good though. Almost identical to the Colt.

Out of curiosity, are there any proof marks on the barrel flats or the watertable of your Colt sxs?

Honestly? Because John Ford and John Wayne wanted to! They had become so reputed for bringing in the cash, that the studio let them re-do the same movie with slight changes.

In fact, they did it a third time with a few more serious changes (to the specifics of the story-line, but overall plot, setting, certain scenes/shoot-outs, etc. are the same thing all over again) a little later!

They must have thought the plot was a good one. They made that same movie 3 times. Rio Bravo, El Dorado, and Rio Lobo.
