Bought this very nice CS-1, plain M, serial number ANF 04xx yesterday at the Reliant in Houston. Traded into it for $550, the dealer never said squat about what it was, don't think he knew it was anything but a garden variety 686.
Looked in the big standard catalog third edition, but didn't see anything on this model. Did I miss a mention?
I know the grips are wrong, but that's what came w/it.
Anyway, I looked at the CS-1 thread on this forum and saw where these guns were made to tighter tolerances. Does anyone know where these tolerances differed from standard?

Nice find! Look at the fourth dot on page 270 and you'll see the reference.

My understanding is these had special treatment during fitting and assembly. It has the proper plain black front sight blade. Too bad about those non-stock RB Combat stocks though ;) .

Thanks for the info!
Since this is 1988 production, that would make it fall in a dash 3 year progression. Does the CS-1 stamp render the dash unstamped?

Not only did he not know what he had; he didn't know what he thought he had.

A high condition pre lock, pre mim, 3 inch 686 with factory combats for $550 in TRADE? In this market??

He won't be in business too long so go back and see what else he's giving away.

Excellent find!
I love it when a dealer does not know exactly what they have..:D

Me too. I bought a 3" CS-1 at a gun show in late 2010. I didn't know what the "CS 1" stamp meant, nor did the dealer. He wouldn't budge from the $700 asking price only because it had a 3" barrel. Wasn't interested in paying that much for it until after doing some research. Went back to the show and it was still available (w. box).

I had one, AZB7299, stamped CS 1-2 with M stamp in a circle. Bought new in late '80's, 4", round butt, wood service stocks. Sold it.

what did you trade for it????

A shrouded Colt Cobra snub that had some finish issues and $150 cash. Paid $400 for the Cobra last year. It was weird in that the cylinder wouldn't spin a full circle when loaded when the cylinder was popped out, as one would do when rotating the cylinder while loading it. The edge of the cartridge rim would catch the cylinder stop. Could have filed the stop a bit and fixed it, but opted not to. Never seen that kind of problem before.

good deal then! used to love trading more than outright buying, now i keep everything i have and just buy! funny how things change. great find though!
i'm still looking for a Nickel 19 snubby. that was my first gun ever over 40 years ago and like a dumb kid, sold it. that is my unicorn!!!

Don't give up. I found one at a local gunshow a few weeks ago. No box or papers, but the finish is near pristine and it appears to have been shot very little. I paid $500 for it.
