I've been thinking about having some work done on my model 28. Square butt to round butt and cutting the barrel down to 2 1/2" or 3". Can anybody make a recommendation on a good gunsmith?

Thank in advance for any help!

That is a very desirable gun to be altering and eliminating any future appreciation in value from collectors. Why not just add a little to what you will pay for those modifications and buy another Smith & Wesson in the configuration that you want? Just my opinion. ...... Big Cholla

I highly recommend Mike Jones At 813-361-8828 in Springhill, Florida. He has been around for 40+ years and recent retiree of the Tampa Police Dept. His shop is very well equipped and carries parts inventory for most manufactures. Tell him Nick recommended you. Hope this helps.

If you decide to go ahead with the project one of the top pistol smiths is Andy Horvath @ 440-458-4369

Andy lives in LaGrange, Ohio, Eastern Std Time zone.
This is one of the most experienced, the nicest, and has made many guns for cowboy movie stars. He is the father of the "Little .44 Specials" out of flattops, IIRC. John Taffin speaks very well of him in his books. Andy has done a square-to-round butt conversion for me on a Ruger Bisley .500 Linebaugh and custom ebony grips, and it is my favorite gun. My neighbor (and shootin' buddy) has had three barrels cut down by Andy on Ruger Redhawks and SuperRedhawks. His wait times are about 6 wks and pricing is very reasonable.
Can't say enough good about him...
Outstanding individual.
