Shot my trusty old Winchester model 42 grouse hunting last fall. Gun locked up. Took it to the local gunsmith who looked it over and said to hang it on the wall.

He tells me the part (what ever part that is) that holds the bold in battery is worn and is not holding the bold in the bolt stop so when the gun is fired the bolt, not being completely locked comes out of battery and locks up the gun.

OK - the gun is old but so am I. I've been hunting and shooting this gun since 1973 and really do not want to retire it to a wall to collect dust and rust.

Anyone know of a gunsmith who is good with old Winchesters and knows about the model 42? Budget is limited - do not want to put the price of a new gun into this one but I am really hoping something can be done to breathe life back into her.

Try Simmons Gun Repair of Olathe, KS. Telephone 913-782-3131. (think Simmons rib) Winchester used to send all of their Model 12 and 42 repair requests to these people. I recently had a late 1920,s Model 12 re-done by them and the results are remarkable. I was inside the facilities and observed some fantastic 42s that had been worked over. They may have more parts available than the rest of the country for these models.

Anytime someone tells me something can't be fixed - what I hear is more along the lines of "I don't want to bother with it" or "I am not qualified to attempt that repair" - but it could also be suggesting that the repair is more costly than the value of the gun. While I am not saying that every problem has a solution - I would surely get a second opinion.

Model 42 would be the 410 version??. I seem to remember something along the lines that the breech block can develop cracks over time. If so, then you find someone who is good at tig welding or does the micro tig welding to weld up the crack in the block. Then a gunsmith who can machine any excess weld and restore the shotgun to operation. Frank

I'd try Simmon's first. They're more likely to have original parts if your gun needs any.

Most of the parts around now are the Browning repro Model 42 parts and they are not a straight accross swap for original Winchester 42 parts.
Some can be fitted,,some not.
New/Old/Stock parts are getting tough to find and expensive as these 42's are getting older and older.

It could be something as simple as a broken slide bar lock spring, or a worn slide bar engagement tip. But even between these two, the former is a $6 part,,the latter a $200+ part/rebuild.

Could be a number of things wrong, all speculation till someone looks at it that knows what they're looking at.
