What would be a "fair" price to pay a qualified gunsmith to fix endshake via shims or stretching yolk, and swapping out a barrel. I'm debating whether I should buy tools/parts to do it myself or just pay to have it done.

Unless you have machinist or gunsmith experience you would be better served taking it to a qualified gunsmith. When I was in the business I loved the articles "Tune Your Revolver" as I would be flooded with work.

I have not done this but end shake shims are no big deal. Fitting a barrel is a Good Gunsmith job. It is a crush fit and requires more tools and knowledge than I have.

BTT, somebody posted a pic of a 3" 65LS and I'm really wanteing to do the barrel swap but not pay a fortune for it. Anyone know and good S&W gunsmiths or armorers in the SE Michigan area for a barrel swap project??

In the back of a Brownells catalog you will find a page that shows usual and customary charges for gunsmithing services. The details listed should serve as a guide.

Brownells is a mail order parts and gunsmithing company and it has a web site. However, the prices are only in the catalog.

I'd send it to SW for a barrel change. A lot of frames are ruined in that operation. If they break it, they will have to fix it.

I just has a barrel swapped at S&W on a 4 screw 44 Mag. It was $98 including FedEx next day air both ways. I assume that they needed to set the replacement barrel back a turn because it's almost impossible to time the thread. I asked for Vito in the Performance Center to do the work & it came back with zero dings in the original bluing.

To do both should cost around $100 to $150.If you want to buy the tools it would cost you 2 to 3 times as much.Assuming you know what you are doing.

Just had a NEW 5 inch barrel installed on my 686. "SMITH" charged me $165.00. That included a recut on the forcing cone and LIGHTENING of the trigger pull. Two of those the "SMITH" did on his own that I didnt ask for. Or needed..

Can't speak to the trigger job but when the barrel is set back a turn, the forcing cone needs works because it's one "turn" closer to the face of the cylinder.

Bruce.

Looks the barrel swap will just turn out to be to be too expensive, I'll just keep looking for a 3" 65LS locally or on GB. I'm going to order the endshake shims and ejector rod tool for a DIY though.
