H&R Single Shot Break Top Rifles

Anybody have one of these? I was thinking it might be a good way to play with 45-70 without spending $1K on a rifle. They have one with a 33" barrel, walnut stocks and a peep sight for around $400. I think they call it the Buffalo Hunter. The guys at the range keep wanting me to get into long range BP cartridge shooting. Most of them have rolling blocks in various large calibers from 45-70 to 45-120. They shoot black powder and cast bullets. Sure looks like a heap of fun. They have good BBQs too

I have both the Buffalo Classic (long barrel, peep sight) and the Handi Rifle, 22" barrel, both in 45-70. They are vary accurate and have become my two favorite 45-70's to shoot. My Marlin and my Creedmore Rolling Block sit in the gunsafe gathering dust.
I am going to replace the rear peep sight on the Buffalo Classic with a Williams receiver sight with more adjustments. Other than needing a good trigger job, it is a great rifle. I only wish they would make the barrels in other calibers..30-40 Krag for one, 375 Winchester for another as I have 5K 300 gr, .375 bullets sitting around.
They are relatively lightweight and I can hold my Buffalo Classic on target much easier than my Rolling Block.
Get one! You won't regret it.

I have theUltra Hunter 2506 with 26" hvy barrell. I used to head shoot deer at 200+ yards. Very accurate barrel. Sent the gun back in to have a heavy 308 and bull 243 barrels fitted to the receiver. Should have never done that. Now all 3 guns have some serious accuracy problems. What used to be under 1 inch at 200 is not 5= at 200. 308 and 243 barrell aren't much to brag about either.

None will do the auto kick out of a spent casing and sometimes with a warm round the breech opens afterthe shot! All 3 are fore sale if any wants a deal.


Guns will now only shoot factory ammo with any kind of accuracy.. Should have left well enough alone when I had the 25-06 shoting under an inch at 200...but no, NOT ME.....!

Don't hunt with either of them any more and would be ashamed to sell one of them to any body too.

Not quite sure what you are trying to say here. If you mean the actions open by themselves after the shot that is a fairly well known phenomena with these rifles. Most common causes are:

1, Oil, grease or dirt on locking surfaces. These surfaces HAVE to be clean and dry. This can also cause accuracy problems.

2, Oil, grease or dirt on breach face, see above.

3, Sometimes neck sized only reloads can cause this problem.

4, Improper fore end contact. Try shooting without fore end. Just make sure you snap the fore end back on before unloading.

I've had a Buffalo Classic for a couple of years now and enjoy shooting it, especially off-hand. Its accurate, and I haven't had any trouble with it popping open. I bought (from Midway) the Williams FP rear sight with target knobs; I think it looks better and the adjustments are easier, which is nice because I shoot a range of different ammunition with it. Check out the Greybeard Outdoors forum. They have a section devoted to the H&R single shots.

Thanks for all the info. I am saving my pennies for one. I like the 30-30 too.
