Bought a gun today but it is pretty much beat up. A model 29 with a four inch barrel.

For years it has ridden in the tool box on the back of a truck among carpenter type tools. The guy needed some money and I gave him $250 for it. After the sale, I carried it to my gunsmith to clean and re-blue. The guy said he put it in the tool box shortly after he bought the truck in 1994 but owned the gun long before that.

My gunsmith told me it really was not worth what I paid for it but I likely will break even on the value by the time he gives me his bill.

Polishing and rebluing a gun is not cheap, and the S&W factory charges about $250+ for a factory refinish. I have reblued 9 or 10 guns with the Blue Wonder three part, hot blue kit and have always been very pleased how they turned out. Its not as good as a professional job but it only cost a few dollars per gun and if you are not happy with it, you're not out much money.

Sounds to me like you bought a 4" 44 Mag "shooter" for $250...

Sounds like a good deal to me...

I would shoot and carry it...

I would have bought it, and most likely used it as is... As a "beater, stash gun, spare for road trips, etc... ie a Utility 4" 44 Mag.

I think you did good.

Pics, man, where are the pics?

I too think you did just fine. I'm not so sure I would've re-blued it, but that's a personal choise.

Pics?

When I get it back, I will post some photos. The handles are all scratched up and one has a small piece missing. The gun is cosmetically horrible. Also the cylinder is hard to turn. But it will fire.

My gunsmith said it would run about $200 or a little more to get it looking decent and it will not have the S&W grips like it does now due to cost.

This is the first time I have bought a gun in this shape.

Nothing wrong with some character. I'd open it up, hose it out, and maybe even DuraCoat it. $250 for a shooter 29? In a New York Minute.

I have a serviceable Rogers Combat grip that I'm willing to donate to this project. Let me know if you can use it.
