Poor little thing; didn't have a chance. :(

The back story goes like this: A couple of months ago I saw a pregnant calico coming around and hitting the feed bowls for our outside cats. I live a few miles out of town and the area seems to be a favorite place for people to dump off their unwanted pets and has been a problem for us for 20+ years. So about a month ago she quit coming around, so I figured she went elsewhere or was having her kittens away from my house. So about 1 1/2-2 weeks ago I saw her again, no longer pregnant and hitting our feed dishes again. You could tell she had been someone's pet at one time as she wasn't totally leery of humans and when she was hungry would actually come up to you and let you pet her. So, a few days later we started seeing little ones around too, so she had brought them over with her. The little ones were very skittish and would disappear when you would go outside.

My wife started putting some pate' can food out for the little ones and they discovered the delights of eating solid food, but were still skittish. But, 3 of the 4 kittens were slowly adjusting to having us moving around outside and were not as shy; the 4th one was still real skittish. About a week ago, I brought out what I call my "Catfish Rig", which is a fishing pole with a toy mouse tied on it and got 2 of them involved with playing with the mouse. So 3 of the kittens were slowly getting used to humans. I figure those kittems were around 4 weeks old then.

The last few days, we hadn't seen the 4th kitten around, until this morning. My wife saw it on the porch and it didn't run away; just hid next to a plastic dog transport kennel. She called me out as she saw a big spot on it's hind end where it was hurt and I went up to it and it didn't run then either. I figured it was hurt fairly badly, so I called my daughter over to help round the little fellow up. We managed to catch the kitten, loaded it into a cat kennel and brought it to the vet. It didn't take but one look by the vet to know that the little fellow was in dire shape, with it's only hope being amputation of it's tail and a big battle of fighting infection just to have a slim chance of saving him. So, the humane thing was just to put the little fellow down and end his suffering.:(

As for the other kittens and the Mommy cat, my daughter already has lined up homes for the kittens and is working up on lining up a home for the Mom. We are still working with the kittens and getting them adjusted to human interaction and the Mom seems to be good with women. She is very shy around me, which tells me that it must have been a man that dumped the poor girl out here.

As for why I posted this: I just wanted to vent a bit about jerks that dump pets and treat them like an unwanted toy.:mad: And it also bothers me to have to put down a little fellow like that kitten even though that was the most humane thing to do for him. At least he's no longer suffering and in pain.

Sometimes you have no choice, especially when they are injured. I use to get angry about the “jerks that dump pets” as you so aptly describe them, but then I realized there is so much inhuman treatment of our fellow man, that it’s no wonder that animals are treated so poorly. Spend and hour talking to a local Leo or prosecutor and the stories of abuse and neglect toward others, especially children, will make your hair stand on end. I don’t see how most do it.

Keep up the good work.

Not Sure If This Is Appropriate For This Discussion

But at least it's good news

The feral cat who used to sleep in my car the one I mentioned in your other thread now sleeps in a cat tree in my spare bedroom.

ETA I named her Mutt because she followed me around work like a dog

That is great, Smoke! Thank you for taking in a sweet furry buddy.

We have one inside cat that showed up right after Hurricane Rita in 05 but we think she was someone's pet that had gotten lost from them during all that fracas of the hurricane evacuation as she was friendly and trusting from the get go. And she is one of the lovingest cats I've ever seen too and gives licks and love nips to her family constantly. We also have 3 permanent outside cats that were/are feral additions. Besides Nee Nee, we have 4 other cats inside but 2 of them belong to my daughter. My daughter's rescue dog also lives mostly with us too.

Again, thank you all. I can't stand to see an animal suffer. It's just too bad the little one was so wild that we couldn't check him out until it was too late to do anything for the little guy. As for the animal dumpers, I would like to catch one and haul them out to the middle of the Atchafalaya Basin and dump them out there and see how they survive.

I'm not a cat person to say the least, but abandoning a cast off critter of any kind burns me.

PS
I don't like to be around cats but if there is one around it usually comes up and pesters me, even after I shoo it away. Go figure.

We had a feral cat that was a calico so that is what we named her. Basically stayed in the sun room and soaked up some rays. then she escaped one night and came back a few days later. We figured she has a boyfriend. Had to put down as she was suffereing from renal failure. So now all the cats she hung out with are gone. Except the one I named. She was pregnant and had her litter. probably had 3-4 cats as we never saw all of them at the same time. Think momma got mixed up with either a possum or racoon as there was a lot of commotion under the car port. Think she is down to two kittens now. Still have BOB our rescue 90 pound pit bull terrier. Spends more time sleeping on the couch with my wife.. He trained us pretty good. barks when he has to go outside to do his business. Then there is the stare. He'll stare at you to let him outside so he can go potty. Frank

My wife and I proudly have six cats. Every one of them came by our care totally by accident.
The three that are the most most amenable are indoor only cats. The other three prefer the outdoors, but stay close by.
Two I found while out running. They were just little kittens, alone by the side of the road.
To me, they are the most wonderful gifts, and we love them dearly.

Attached is a favorite pic. The little guy is Niko, found exactly 2 yrs ago. He's next to Bria, our now passed away baby of 19 yrs. She adopted Niko as if he was her own.

Life is full of tragedy, but also miracles.
