Saw him performing live his Mark Twain impersonation in Lee Hall auditorium at Mississippi State University back in the day (1972?). A very good actor, in my opinion.

Sad to hear this. He was a great actor, and his "Mark Twain" was letter perfect. May he rest in peace.

Thank you, OP. This is the first I've heard of his passing. Recently re-watched Magnum Force (again) and was able to concentrate on Mr. Holbrook's performance. He could really act. Never saw him as Mark Twain. Understand I really missed something. R.I.P., sir.

The wife and I saw him as Mark Twain in Daytona Beach many years ago. Absolutely perfect performance and a memory we will always cherish. Supposedly, every show was different because Twain was so prolific there was almost no need to repeat many of his lines, quips and anecdotes.
When he was on stage, he WAS Mark Twain.

Ha! That’s the first thing that came to mind when I saw this thread. I never really liked Adrianne Barbeau anyway.

Sorry to read this but he did have a good run. I enjoyed him as an actor. I agree his "Mark Twain" was hard to beat. Whenever I think of Mark Twain I see him.

Yeah, that was a great Hal Holbrook moment when he shot her & everyone clapped! But, I have to say I have no problems with Ms. Barbeau's talents!

Not one of my favorites. Remember him mostly in Midway. Had forgotten about the Eastwood movie Magnum Force.

I've read from creditable historical sources that Hal Holbrook was miscast as Commander Joe Rochefort in the original "MIDWAY". Rochefort was a major figure in the United States Navy's cryptographic and intelligence operations from 1925 to 1946, particularly in the Battle of Midway. His contributions and those of his team were pivotal to victory in the Pacific War. From Dayton, Ohio, he was described as reserved and nerdy and not anywhere near the southern bumpkin portrayed by Holbrook, although it was not really Holbrook's fault because that's his acting style.
