Can anyone identify this hammer for me? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Mark. So it is also postwar, correct? I was pretty sure it was a K frame hammer, but I was uncertain of the vintage. I thought "postwar" but wanted to make sure.

It has the "step" for the post-1944 hammer block, so that should make it post-war.

I thought it was a trick question. :D

Where's the lump at lower left that the stirrup pin goes through?
If that hammer fits a Smith, it is a later one than I have ever been inside of.

You've been inside one? You'll note my observation was limited to the part that's visible from outside. I wouldn't have fit inside even before I fell in love with fries and beer ... :D

Hi,

Does your hammer look like mine? Look at the back above where the stirrup would be and see if it has a hole like in my picture. If it does then the hammer uses a "J" frame style mainspring setup. It looks like the bottom of the hammer has been ground off where it would meet with the rebound slide. Just my guess from what I can see.

Yeah, looks like it was converted to the pre 1961 I and J frame ball and socket spring strut for a coil spring.

The K frame grip frame would need modification to create a mount for the lower end of the coil spring.

Here is the way Travis Strahan (SP?) installed the "J" frame style mainspring in a "K" frame PPC revolver he built. The bracket fit in the mainspring slot held in by the strain screw. No modifications had to be made to the frame so it could be reversed if you wanted.

I gotta love that Strahan conversion, but it looks like Jack's hammer has had the rebound "toe" removed as well. Why would anyone want the rebound deactivated ?

The toe is still there, see the hammer mounted in the gun:

All that was eliminated is the old flat spring mount w/pin and a bunch of extra weight. Here's an unmodified K pre war hammer:
