I recently aquired a 686-3 and I believe the hammer nose spring is either gone or broken. There is no tension to return the hammer nose to the proper position.

Looks like a simple fix, but having never done it, I would appreciate some advice.

Is it held in by a roll pin? Should I replace the roll pin?

Any special tricks I need to know?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. According to the exploded view the 686 has a spring for that function.

On occasion the hammer nose will be so high that it will hang above the slot for the hammer that the hammer will not even enter in the slot.

Hammer Nose Spring

The hammer nose is held in by a rivet and you will need to drift it our and then restake it with a shallow angle center punch supported on the other side of the rivet with a matching punch. I suggest finding a good revo mechanic as they should have the proper tools. Otherwise the rivet will drift out with use at the most inopportune time and hit the side plate.

S&W uses the same exploded view for many models. The hammer nose spring is a coil and those simply do not break. The gun will function perfectly well without it so just leave it alone, it isn't worth the trouble and what are you going to do if you do take it apart and find the hammer nose doesn't have the notch for the spring?

I checked out Brownells cataloge and they show a spring for the 686. So I ordered a spring and rivet. Will post how it turns out.
