the butt of the gun reads C 330380

the yoke area of gun has a N on it then below the N.

below those numbers is a 3

You are too early. That C-prefix SN would put it in the late 1955-early 1956 range for a shipping date. It can correctly be called a "pre-Model 10."

I'll amplify a bit on that point. S&W adopted a new model numbering (Model XX) nomenclature system in the late 1950s. The Model 10 was the new designation of the standard Military and Police (M&P) model, and the "Mod. 10" marking was stamped inside the yoke. That began in the low C 400000 range. An earlier significant change in the M&P lockwork occurred in 1948, at the approximate serial number of S 990000. Therefore all earlier K-frame M&P revolvers having serial numbers between (about) S 990000 and C 400000 are identical to the later Model 10, except for the absence of a model number stamped in the yoke. Therefore, yours is a legitimate "pre-Model 10" M&P, as it does not have the Mod. 10 stamping in the yoke.

Don't know if this will help you or not. I picked one up recently with a 5" barrel. The serial # on mine is C 184782 When I was asking about it on this forum, I was told it dated to being shipped in 1952. I was happy of that as that's the year I was born. Only problem is, the revolver is probably in better shape than I am! :-)

I love mine. I got mine by a fluke as I have been looking for one with a 4" barrel. I actually like the 5" very much - it's a great shooter - probably one of my favorites out of my "herd". Good luck with your's - I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. To me, the M & P (pre 10 or whatever you want to call it) is one of the best all around revolvers in 38 spl. I'm sure you'll really enjoy it. When you get it, post some photos please. I love seeing what others have!

juiced38spl - attached are photos of mine

As I said above - I was told this one dates to 1952

The grips on mine do not appear to be the originals and were switched out at some point

Yes, probably mid-1952. The correct type of Magna grips show up fairly frequently on eBay. They are distinctive if you know what to look for.The top of the "horn" is sort of flattened, not rounded, as the later ones are.
