My K38 is really tight and keeps time pretty well but I'm thinking of replacing the hand. It doesn't look like most of the ones I see on numrich and ebay. Mine has 2 pins and most of the ones I see have 3 pins. How thick is mine? Will any post war S&W made k frame hand of my thickness fit it? Thanks!

The hand fit is determined by the ratchet. You need to measure the thickness of your hand to find out what you need and if you use a thicker hand, you will need to cut the ratchets to fit. Load your cylinder with empties and check your carry up. Your description of really tight and timing pretty well is not convincing enough for a replacement.

Ken, when I cock the hammer fairly hard it times up and locks all 6 chambers. If I cock it moderately it doesnt quite time up on 3 of the chambers. Double action it times and locks just fine.

I am capable of doing many things with S&W revolvers but the problem you describe would be above my pay grade. If it were my gun I would be handing it off to an experienced S&W armorer. Unfortunately the good ones a few and far between these days.

If your K22 carrys up in slow double action, but does not in single action, you have a sometimes difficult fix. Theoretically, if it times in double action, it should always time in single action! But, I have found guns that behave like yours. Sometimes installing a wider hand will fix you right up, sometimes it will fix the single action, but bind the double action!!
I would try a hand wider than your by .001 first, then .002 if the .001 still does not do the job. If that does not fix you issue, the next step is to send it to some one that is well versed on Smith actions.
You will need to measure your hand and the get some wider than yours. Not all hands fit the same, in my experience. I have installed hands the same width that will work different, one may work, one may not. Any K frame hand will work, the two pin ones have been replace by three pin, but either will fit. I am not a fan of peening the ratchets. I guess I'm just not good at it, but I have distorted the ratchet profile, and it seems not to last. Maybe just me, but it seems to require an expertise and maybe tools I do not have.

thanks richard! it's a k38. any idea how thick the hand is?

richard do you have any idea how thick my original hand is?

i got it measured. .093. thanks for all the help fellas!

That's good! Standard hands run to .095, oversize up to .10. They are not sold by specific size, so sometimes you have to trim one to your correct size. That is very hard to do as they are hardened. Best to have different sizes to choose from. The narrower the size, to start with, the longer the gun will be functional as you wear hands and replace. A well timed K38 should fire many thousands of rounds without needing a refit.

Some of these parts have become difficult to find.

I have a pretty good supply of internal parts for both M&P and K-frame revolvers (centerfire, not rimfire) including several hands (both 2 and 3 pin variations), hammer noses, hammers, triggers, cylinder latches/thumb piece/screw, etc. PM me with your needs and I may be able to provide.

I bought a set of used triggers and 2 hands. I took off one of the hands and replaced my k38 hand. Times up perfectly now. Thanks again for all the help fellas!

Well this mini-drama pretty much says it all about this hive!

No matter what you need or need to know, there's someone here that can help----and they jump right up and do it!

That's pretty cool---restores your faith in your fellow man!
