I have a M&P 15-22 (22lr) and am trying to replace the plastic HG with an 13-14” aluminum HG. Have tried Taacom3g and Midwest these are great HG’s but when properly installed they leave a gap about an eighth of an inch between HG and receiver. Yes I have removed the two alignment tab from the receiver. Any suggestions for replacement that will not leave any gap.

Tacticool has some options that don’t leave the gap. For my own rifles it have used the cheepo free float tubes that slip over a long round nut then attach with six socket headed screws. None of the factory screw holes lined up when the tube was butted to the receiver so I drilled and tapped new holes in the correct place. Even after cutting the lugs off of the receiver, I still had to file a notch in the tube to allow zero gap. Of course I had to use the Tacticool adapter nut to start with. Tacticool didn’t offer their free float tubes when I bought my rifles or I would have used them.

Unfortunately the gap will be present with normal AR15 handguards due to the design of the 15-22 upper. Only way to get around will involve serious modification to the handguard by trial and error.

There is only one manufacturer in the world that makes aluminum hand guards for the 15-22 that actually fit them perfectly.
You can get the adapter and do some machining yourself, but the time it would take is a bit and the final product...well...depends on how good you are or how much you squint.
The cost of doing it yourself along with the adapter is about the same as if you just bought the correct one from the start.

Which Manufacturer makes aluminum handguards for the 15-22 that actually fit them perfectly? I'm new to the M&P 15-22 platform and am out of my wits scouring the internet for an aluminum option that actually fits correctly without a gap...

Just put our name in the google and maybe add the standard commercial extension

I am looking for an original 15/22 sport handguard. If any of you that have upgraded to a tacticool or other handguard and would be willing to part with the old plastic one please let me know! Thanks

After having owned a 15-22 for 12 years I have to ask a dumb question. Why would anyone want to replace the plastic OEM handguard?

I mean...it's a rimfire. It isn't going to be shot out to 300 yards. I have "real" AR 15s and they have plastic as well. Their accuracy, with a non-free floating handguard, is pretty fine, even out to 300 yards.

Probably because they just want to.

Looks for one. Rigidity for another, especially if you're using open sights.
Longer options. The 12.5" is what should have come on the rifle. Some people like having the front of the hand guard right up to the flash hider.
Push button sockets with limited rotation.
