Handguns are trouble in NJ -- So I focus on pump shotguns

Unlike California, most handguns can be bought in New Jersey from out of state as long as you go through an FFL. But each requires a permit to purchase and it makes building or improving a handgun accumulation highly impractical.

So instead I've been drawn to long arms, especially shotguns. Now with side-by-side shotguns, unlike my wallet, the sky's the limit. However, pre-war pump action shotguns by makers such as Winchester, Remington and Ithaca are classic works of mechanical beauty that can be had at prices that many consider affordable. Recently I've been possessed by irrational exuberance for pre-WW2 20 gauge pumps. To me, the choices are limited: Remington 17, Remington 31, Winchester 12 and Ithaca 37. This is what is in the fold so far:

What's left is to scarf up an Ithaca 37, and then to be on the hunt to upgrade.

This I can handle :)

I used an Ithaca Ultra LightWeight 20 gauge for peasant hunting years ago - I shoot lefty and it was quite a little gun to handle. I've recently picked up the Standard Manufacturing Ithaca "trench gun". Nice gun, not so sure it's worth the $$$, though it is an excellent copy.

Nice. Some of my older shotguns are two Model 12’s, 16 & 20 ga. A model 37, 1940’s I think. We have a Lewis double-barrel, I thought may of been made by Ithaca, 16 ga.

Can’t forget my early 50’s sweet-sixteen Browning.

It’s a pain to move, but I’d consider a NJ exit plan. That depends on a host of factors, may or may not be a viable option.

So I talk about focused 20 gauge aspirations and what do I get:

Other calibers are great also
Move out of state
Broaden your search to more manufacturers
Doubles
Semi-auto

Talk about enablers

This is not prewar but I picked up a Marlin model 120 12 gauge 3" chamber for $240. a while back. I later added a 30" full choke barrel for it from ebay. I didn't need another pump shotgun but being a fan of Marlins and for the price I could not pass on it.
