Happy Birthday, Mr. Browning

Browning and my Dad's dad were friends. They swapped a few guns. I've got a couple of letters from Browning to Gramps around here somewhere.

There is an excellent Browning museum in Ogden, UT., about 40 miles north of Salt Lake.

A few years back, the state legislature designated Browning's 1911 as the official gun of the state of Utah.

Workshop

John Moses Browning, now days it takes a committee of engineers and a slew of computers to do what he did by shooting over a patch of grass...

My favorite thing in the museum, even in light of seeing the original design of pretty much every iconic American firearm, was his workshop. They left it in place as found at the time of his death in Belgium.

Cool to see him holding what appears to be the SA-22 with the slim front stock. I have seen those posted on a sale sight. I had one as a younger fellow and first time out with it I was using the hood of my car as a rest. First time with a bottom ejector and the car's paint job was the testimony to that! To celebrate I think I'll have to pull out my High power, my Ithica 37 and my 1923 FN .22 trombone and head to the range.

Erics--I always liked that photograph too. Think of the multitude of guns with which he could have been photographed--and he picked a .22. To me it speaks to the human nature of the legend--he is just like one of us--.22's are FUN and I think remind us of being kids again.

The original (I always found interesting there is no slide safety on the original, that was added later at the Army's request I understand):

John:

Proof positive, that no matter how great a useful item is designed, there will always be a fool standing by, one that can't pound sand into a rat hole by himself, ready, and eager to "improve" on someone else's great design.

I can't even imagine how many GI's have silently thanked him over the years.

Is that the key for the IL?? No wonder you only show one side. :D

Wonder what John Moses would think of this thing.

Bkreutz:
Here is the other side of it. No! That is not a Internal Lock Key. Thankfully Colt has not started to try pleasing anti gun politicians with idiotic engineering. Yet?
