A cousin of mine had a Model 66 stolen from his house over 25 years ago. Not long ago, he got a call from a LE organization, I forget which one, and they asked him if he had a gun stolen from him. He had to think about it for a minute, and told them "Yes, but it was 25 years ago." He was asked to describe it, which he did. The officer told him, "I'm sitting here looking at it."
Someone had tried to pawn it, and the serial # popped up as stolen. He has it now, it looks like it did when it was stolen. And he is living happily ever after.

Every now and then someone gets lucky. I gave my brother a Model 37 Airweight when he was running a small store alone. It was stolen of course and dutifully reported by me. Fifteen years later I had the same experience, a call from the county Sheriff to come pick it up. It had been taken off a suspect in Virginia and returned to NC. It did not have a scratch on it that wasn't already there. Same grips too. I guess even thieves love their guns enough to take care of them.
