Have a new (to me) Dodge RAM 1500. It has the small bed, 67”. I’m looking for a hard top bed cover - any recommendations? Things to consider, Good, bad? Thanks

Do you mean a canopy. I had a Ram 1500 and put a Leer canopy on it. They matched the paint perfectly. That was a 2014 truck. Last August I got a Ram 2500, again ordered a Leer canopy, perfect paint match. I have an old Chevy snow plow truck with a roll up cover and it isn't worth the effort to roll it up.

Fordson - I know what you mean - a hard bed cover not a top. I have a 2020 Ram and went with a Gator tri-fold soft cover that was $350 shipped vs. almost $1,000 for the aluminum tri fold. Installed two years now and not complaints with wear or any leaks. I bought the brand based on the recommendation of friends who had them. They have hard cover options roll up and tri fold.

Baxter6551 - yeah, that’s it. However, I’m looking at a hard one. This is based on my experience owning a soft topped Jeep Wrangler . That top moved and flapped too much at any kind of speed. Also, I’m interested in more security that hard tonneau could provide over a soft one.
Your link to Gator has their hard top model, which looks real good. It’s just pricey………

Yes I understand and friends have that brand of hard cover which they like and no issues. I like the way the hard tri fold cover folds all the way up and becomes a cab protector and allows full use of the bed. Mine folds twice and the front of the bed is still under the cover check out their web site.

Yep, those are some really nice covers. I’m looking at their website comparing one to the other. Thanks again.

Any one else have any other recommendations?

Check out Ranch Fiberglass.
My brother and I each have one of their caps. They’re less expensive than Leer and A.R.E. and are very well made. They also offer Tonneau covers. If you have a local dealer, they may be willing to haggle on price. Mine was…

We have been using Diamondback covers on LE and FD trucks for a while now. The HD version is tough enough that you can park a full size Polaris side-by-side on top of it!

Heavy Duty, Hard Tonneau Covers | DiamondBack Covers

They come with front and rear locks, tie downs, and are easy for two guys to mount. The covers do lift off if you need to haul something a bit bigger than average. It takes a little more time to remove it completely if you need the whole bed open.

I put a BakFlip trifold on my 08 Ridgeline when it was new - still my daily driver and never given any problems. Mostly garage kept and still looks new. I'd buy another.

Very pleased with a LoMax tri fold on a '21 F150 PowerBoost 6.5' bed. Very low profile, nothing exposed, no additional moulding around the edges.

Tried the hard roll-up but they take up too much bed room unless you're sporting an 8'. Never liked the soft versions.

Diamondback HD looks good on paper but you gotta stow the ramps in the bed, eating up most of your stowage there. Not to mention the load of the machine already. And the kit for 2? On a 1/2 ton? Yeah, no thanks.

My best friend had a Leer cap on his old truck and liked it. He bought a new GMC2500 and went with a retractable aluminum cover. We installed it in less than an hour. I was pretty impressed with the design and he is happy with it.

BAKFLIP MX4 TONNEAU COVER

I did a lot of research for a cover.

Then I did a LOT more.

When I felt 'right' about it I went with the BakFlip MX4 and am 100% pleased with it's performance.

I live in Texas so you know the heat.

I took it to Minnesota and exposed it to -26 deg F windchill and -16 deg F real temperature.

No change in it's personality and function in either climate.

It has been great as I use my truck for long distance traveling and feel very safe with my goods in the back.

I also have the BakBox hanging on the internal rails right behind the cab. This is great for anything to be tucked away and then easy to access. It runs the whole width of the bed of the truck, suspended off the floor.

I most certainly would do it again.

+1 for BakFlip. Put one on my '19 Colorado in less than 30 minutes by myself. Keeps contents dry in even the hardest storms.

Good price point and they offer a military discount for active/retired/veterans.

I have used the same Undercover hard top on my Ram trucks since 2011. I had it on the 2011 then the 2014 and now on the 2018. I also had one on my 2006 Toyota Tundra before that. Great tops and easy to install and remove.

Thanks all, for your inputs and recommendations. I decided to go with the Gator FX Quad fold. Quality for to budget I had were the factors, as always. Should be here Saturday, so I know what I’ll be doing that day. Thanks again.

Absolutely, I have the ARE toneau cover on my RCSB and it's literally water tight.

I've had a Leer hard tonneau cover on my truck for 21 years. It has held up well, looks great and has been pretty leak proof.

But I will never have another one.

It pretty much turns the bed into the world's biggest trunk. If you ever want to take it off to put something taller than the bed in the truck, it takes 3 or 4 people to take it off and reinstall it.

My next truck will definitely have one of the foldable tonneau covers.

Well, let’s see some pictures.

I am curious as to the outcome of your choice.

I had a hard cover tonneau for my Ford, and while it was a quality unit, i found it severely limited my cargo options for the truck as far as size for things like a stove, and limited loading something like mulch over the sides. In hindsight, I wish I had gotten a folder or a roll up unit.
