I know I must be getting old, because I finally broke down and bought my first Harley Davidson. I've been living in the Midwest for over 10 years now and the flat straight rodes are really best suited for a cruiser, and as long as I was getting a cruiser, I figured it would be an HD.

The bike I bought is a 2009 Fat Bob that a local car dealership took in on trade and just wanted to get rid of. It has just over 2,000 miles on it and came with an HD removeable windscreen and HD saddlebags. It was priced about $3K less than the local dealerships try to get for a similar bike, so I know I got a deal. The fact that Winter could be here in a few weeks probably helped motivate the dealer to sell the bike at such an attractive price (they usually do not deal with motorcycles). Right place at the right time for me as I've been looking at these bikes for the past year.

I've owned bikes most my life - Honda, Yamaha, BMW and a Buell. This is my first Harley and I was wondering if there is a preferred forum on the internet that I should look into. Initially, I'm interested in general maintenance and choices for a new seat (the stock one looks cool but really needs to be higher and have a real passenger seat on it). I'm not really into group rides and all the social stuff - I prefer solo rides or with a friend or two. I also don't want a forum that puts down bikes just because they were not made in the USA.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

clang

When I started looking for my first Harley I spent a good bit on time on the Harley Davidson Forum and learned a lot before I purchased mine.

Harley Davidson Motorcycle Reviews, Performance, Repair, Parts - HDForums.com

It's moderators are a little looser than you'll see here, on occasion the Lounge forum can be downright brutal. But it's a great place to learn which modifications work and which ones are a waste of money.

I love my 2007 Electra Glide Ultra Classic, but after I got it I was having a thermal issue. Pretty much any time, even in cool weather, that I stopped at a traffic light the heat from the rear cylinder would almost fry the unmentionables. I was ready to take it back to the motor company when I discovered by reading the forum that the issue was due to a factory setup to meet EPA which caused the engine to run lean at idle. It was a realitively easy fix and now all is well.

Hope you enjoy your Harley.

V Twin Forum is what I have spent most of my time on when I first got back into Motorcycling. The H-D Forum is still on my favorites list as well. Sometimes for a rare and specific problem you might have to try both.

HarleyTechTalk is one that I've used over the years - though haven't been lurking there lately. I liked both the many catagories of the forum (like this one) and the willingness of its members to share ideas and experiences.
You made a great purchase, I hope you have many miles of riding pleasure ahead! I've been scooting around on various brands and models now for over 50 years!
