Harley's Anyone?

Benn riding 38 years, only owned 4 bikes. A 75 Honda 400 four, an 81 Yamaha 650 twin, a 93 1200 Sportster and this 01 Lowrider. I rode the Sportster from California to Milwaukee in '98 for Harvey's 95th anniversary. I won't do that again..

If I could have one stock Harley it would be a mid '90s Dyna Lowrider. Harley just SO nailed it with the whole series post Shovels... comfort, speed, handling, brakes... Hate to say it but once you've gone rubber... :D

I redid my Suzuki 1200 bandit with the detuned GSXR 1100 engine back to the 1100 it once was. She was an animal. Speed was addicting. I figured I better get off of it before I die on it. Once I learned how to use body English and drop a leg in turns I was dragging foot pegs. I was that good. It was a exciting ride. I needed to get off or slow down. I had to give it up. I was spanking these young kids on there rockets. After they buzzed me. It was fun. As I went up in speed the cars are actually coming at you. At 150mph I'm all alone. It's a rush.

I am 3rd generation harley rider . My father came to Az in 1956 (winter ) on a 47 FL Knucklehead . I have never owned and rode anything but a harley now for 50 yrs . When I was 16 , I rode my harley from Iowa to Az , 2 day trip . Will never forget it . I've about had them all -- Flatheads , Knuckleheads , Pan heads , Shovels , Evo's and Twin Cams . I have always like the looks of the older bikes , a windshield - leather saddle bags and police seat and just a nice shiny paint job with some chrome .
Yeah I know , " Chrome won't get you home " . Well I always said that I would be the best looking guy on the side of the road .
I just thought I should mention that the current HD oil is not what I would use . I have been a strong voice for their oil in the past, but not anymore . They kept demanding the oil co make it for a certain price --cheap . They have went through several makers and I have heard that it is now coming out of Venezuela (citigo) . There are co's here in America that make great aftermarket oil for a harley , both old and new bikes . This is just my opinion .

I heard that if you don't use genuine HD oil, that Harley will void your warranty.:D:rolleyes:

My current ride is a 2014 Electra Glide Ultra Classic. My wife and I have ridden in 16 states in the south - southeastern part of the country and love taking week long trips. Most of the time we travel with just us, but there are times we schedule trips with a co-workers who also ride. We're also fortunate enough to live where we can ride out our driveway into the Ozarks which offers the best motorcycle riding in middle America.

Although I've owned several metric cruisers and a dual sport (a Suzuki DL650 VStrom, which is an awesome motorcycle), but my first touring bike was a 2007 Electra Glide Ultra Classic. Ol' Blue was my first Harley Davidson and it's always hard to forget your first. I don't get into the whole Harley culture thing and I shopped the touring bike market pretty thorough before I bought either one of these. The Ultra Classic had the features and comfort level I was looking for and was willing to pay for it.

For the record, after owning Harley's for 10 years I have never found a drop of fluid under either one of mine.

Never owned a Harley..Had bunches of others. First M-C was a 47 Indian. A real PITA MC. Had Triumph Norton Hondas Yamaha and others. Wish I could still ride..but I'd kill myself now. So I stay away from them. Just like I stay away from Colts

Been down 5 times in 40 years of riding. Thankfully, it always cost more to fix the bike than to fix me. Switched to a C7 Corvette. Easier to keep the shiny side up. And folks still pull out in front of me.

Important skill for HD riders to master is that art of when to
"lay 'er down".

I have a 2006 Heritage Classic and a 2005 Softail Standard. I would love to have an Ultra Classic, but it won't fit into my budget for a while.

Not a Harley but what about an old Indian?

My Great Grandfather on his 1919 Indian Twin with side car. In the 1920's

Sceva, nice pic and special to you too I'll bet. Your post reminded me I have a couple of pics of my dad in June 1950, in Tokyo, Japan when he was part of the 8th US Army Occupation Force, getting ready to head to Korea in Sept, 1950 to fight in the Korean War. He told me several times that he hated the day this picture was taken because he was having to sell his 1948 Harley FL to a Japanese guy because, of course, he couldn't take it with him to Korea. He said there were a lot of sad soldiers in Japan at the time having to part with their bikes. There was quite a bit of history between Harley Davidson and the Japanese well before this picture was taken so parts and accessories were readily available to GI bikers at the time. This explains all the accessories he put on the bike. He sold it for $600.00 which is almost what he paid for it in 1948.

I have not got that Harley "thing".. I love to ride.. I learned how to operate a Forklift in 1991/3 unloading sea containers of Transmissions from Japan destined for the York, Pa Harley "Manufacturing" plant.. Just can't see the extra 10k just for HD.. All the stuff is made off shore.. I ride ,sometimes, with a group of "Harley People".. it seems we always go to an HD open house somewhere.. I will pick up something and point and say "I forgot my glasses ,I can't read this. What does it say"?? Always read "Made in Japan or China".. lol... My C90 boulevard 06 on the Backside of the famed Devil's Den in Gettysburg, pa..

Admin; How do I get a larger Pic??

I luv that Pan of yours, I would like a 52 Myself, That being the year I was Born.
In high school I learned to ride at Lodi Cycle Bowl, Flat tracking.
The oldest HD I rode daily was a 1940 Flathead 80" foot clutch and suicide shift , Also had a 47 Knuck, 80 wide glide, 2006 1200 sport, 2008 FXDC, And currently a 2012 Street glide....

I love motorcycles, but I have no time for Harleys. They are not very good motorcycles, and they are not good value for the money. They do have good resale value, which I guess makes them a good product, but I want to get the value out of my motorcycle while I ride it, not when I sell it.

Here is what my rigid looked like right after I put it together. Different gas tank, spoked wheel in the back. More polished aluminum, less black powdercoating. I had a little over $5,000 in it. The frame, the transmission case, and the engine were brand new.the rest I got when I worked at several bike shops and Harley Davidson dealerships in Virginia, NC and Georgia. I ordered a brand new 80 inch Evo crate motor from Milwaukee and as soon as I got it I took the top end apart, replaced the cam with an Andrew's, replaced the pistons with some Keith Black 10:1s, ported and polished the heads and went with Crane pushrods and valve springs.
The 5 speed gearset I got when I installed a 6 speed in a customers bike and he had no need for the almost brand new drive that I took out. He almost gave it away. I got the primary drive system complete with inner and outer primary and a great Rivera ProClutch, chain and compensating sprocket when I installed a 3 inch open belt primary on a customers Big Dog.
I used Jay Brake forward controls, and matching Jay Brake handlebar controls with Wilwood calipers. Notice the Jay Brake dental mirror on the handlebars...
I ran a Crane Hi-4 single fire ignition with a S&S Super E carb. My key was a hidden toggle switch under the tank with the starter button next to it.
I took the lower fork legs, put them in a lathe and turned down the fender mounts. Riding in the rain reminded me alot of standing in front of a showerhead. :)
