I bought my new 15-22 last August. Went to the range and fired 300 rounds. Had one of the rounds standing up. Other than that, no FTF, or FTE.
So today I went to the range. On about the 100th round or so, through my ear protection, I heard something different, and some smoke where there usually wasn't any. It was jammed, and upon opening it, the shell was stuck in the barrel, and was slightly mushroomed. It required being pried out, but came out fairly easily. Can you attribute this to the ammunition? Winchester 36 grain, hollow point.

Mine doesn't like hallowed points, jams all the time and has double feeds. Stick to regular round nose.

That never happened to me, but yesterday I ran Winchester 555 and I had multiple FTFs and FTEs. I usually shoot Federal 550 bulk packs but Wally World only had Winchester 555 packs. I'm going to stick with Federal 550 packs.

Absolutely, 22LR are cheaply made, brass walls vary, bullets spin in the casing (on some manufacturers brand), and Duds happen 1 on 200 on average maybe more (Remington sucks). Purchase a good brand, just once, and see if you can duplicate it. Unless your rifle barrel is out of spec. (I don't think S&W would let one out like that with there quality control), your rifle if out of spec. would have issues on every shot. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I'll buy Federal next time. Bummer, I had already bought 4 boxes of Winchester 555.

Shot a box of Winchester 333s today -- 7 FTFs that all went "bang" the second time around. Guess I'll stick to the Federal 550s from Wally World -- over a 1000 rounds and not a single hiccup. I'd rather be lucky than good, no?

And my 15-22 with an EOTech 511 and a Magpul AFG is a really sweet set-up. Bring on that Steel Challenge -- no more DFLs for ME! :D

It may be ammunition. I have shot over 2000 rounds of cci AR ammo and have had zero problems. 375 bullets for 24 bucks.I would also advise not to use federal. I have heard that it gave problems, and I even think the gun manual recommends not using it.

The caution is against Remington; Federal is one of the recommended brands. I have well over a 1,000 rounds of Federal Champion through mine in the past week and not a bobble.

Got any pics of the mushroomed round? Curious to see if it was ammo or maybe a misfed round set off by extractor, dunno. I stay far far away from the bulk 555 and wildcat. Those gold bullets are nasty dirty and from the one box I got lots of them were loose. My kid grabbed one that fell apart in his hands.

Nope I see the pin strike. Wow. Gods thing you didn't lose any parts or fingers.

That's the classic out-of-battery firing. Usually launches the extractor into the next firing bay.

Used to be a very common problem with this rifle but of late appears less often. Caused by the cartridge not being fully loaded in the chamber with the trigger is pulled. I aggressively polished my chamber and have not had one in the past two years.

I tried the Winchester Super X 555...glad I got through them...no more ...they were ****. My 15-22 loves to eat CCI ($$) and Federal Lightning (:))....Glad to were not hurt with that out-of-battery.

I shot a brick of Federal this week and had 1 FTF in the box no FTE.

In the Winchester I shot two 333 boxes and had about a FTE or FTF every 5th magazine or so.

Not terrible by any means and I can live with that seeing as we are talking .22 ammo but I will stick with federal as long as it is on the shelf.

22 Ammo for M & P model 15 rifle

My rifle is about 7 months old and I have in excess of 6,000 rounds thru it. The rifle likes CCI Std vel or the bulk packed Federals. No problems at all with those two brands. Remington ammo is trouble. The priming mixture does not get evenly deposited in the rim. If you have a misfire, by turning the ctge slightly in the chamber might allow it to go bang and sometimes it won't. Quality control issues. I have a red dot sight on mine and at 50 yds it puts all the bullets in one hole. Great gun!

So what makes the round not seat all the way?

This round was seated completely in the barrel. Only the mushroomed parts/end were visible. I assumed the cartridge shell was faulty, and the powder blew out the back of the shell. No more Winchester for me.
