DuraCoat now offers several inexpensive DIY application packages. Does anyone have any experience using them, specifically on semi-autos?

My son and I restored an old Wards Western Field/Mossberg 22 rifle and we finished it with Duracoat. It looks very nice and it wasn't hard to apply. Just follow the directions and make sure the surface is well prepared before spraying!

Bought and refinished a CZ-82 with Duracoat for a fun project. The key to success is in the prep work. I made a couple of boo-boos, like in everything I do, but the end result came out fine and has held up well except for the extractor, which I should have left unfinished.

Looking to try to camo my all black Savage 22-250. May just give it a try.

Thanks, I'll take a look at Aervoe also.

One big question about doing a semi-auto, like a 5906, is what areas to avoid. For example, do you coat the slide and frame rail surfaces? Does the coating have enough thickness to affect tolerances?

I would NOT apply to the slide and frame rail surfaces. The tolerances would definitely be affected and the finish is probably not durable enough to resist abrasion from sliding parts. Avoid any sliding, rotating, or tight fitting surfaces.

On one episode of the "reality gun shows", they applied a finish (chrome??) to a 1911. I told my wife that they made a mistake in plating everything, including the slide rails. Any gunsmith should know better than that. Sure enough, it would not assemble and they had to grind the surface off.
