When cocking single action sometimes the cocking effort is extremely high. Double action not as often. I also feel a slight click in the trigger when starting DA. Once cocked trigger release is great. I have noticed if I push back on the thumbpiece for the cylinder release when cocking it is somewhat better...Any ideas?

Have you popped off the sideplate and checked the guts? I'm thinking you have some gunk inside that needs to be evicted.

It could be a lot of things. I could be the mainspring strain screw backed out by someone to provide a smoother trigger until it binds on the hammer strut. It could be grip screw of aftermarket stocks in the wrong place. If I remember, some Pachmayer rubber grips had this problem. It could be the hammer stud is broken. Could be the bolt is riding high and interfering with the hammer stroke. ETC. Maybe you have endshake and the face of the cylinder is dragging on the back of the barrel. Look for scratch marks on the ball end of the cylinder. Maybe others that I haven't thought of! Good luck on your investigation!

Just had a 48-4 with this issue, one of the pins, the sear pin I believe was proud, it marked the side plate. I used a punch to set it back flush. Problem solved.

just investigated a bit I opened the cylinder and for some reason the thumbpiece is not right. I thought it should have some spring pressure to keep it forward...no go. Like something is missing. It is loose in the slot till the cyl is closed. Missing a spring??

If there is no spring pushing the bolt and thumbpiece (It is not the cylinder release as many want to call it!) forward either you or a former owner have lost the spring and plunger when dis-assembling the gun. CALL S&W Customer Service and ask them to send you the bolt spring and plunger. Phone number is 800-331-0852. Unless things have changed they will sell you the parts for less than most retailers or send them to you free. They also do not charge shipping like everyone else does!

Losing the spring and plunger is very common when those not familiar with S&Ws dis-assemble the lock work the first time!:D

The FIRST place to check for S&W parts is the factory. For some reason no one seems to understand this.:(

I have a 1905 4th. change M&P that I got off of Gun Broker
that had that same problem. Turns out " Bubba" installed a
home made main spring. Replaced it with a used one I got
off of Ebay and everything works as it should.

Thanks.. I haven't taken it apart so missing inaction when I got it...the plunger is there..I guess I need a spring . Not from a ball point pen I take it
LOL

Just a thought...if the cylinder bolt plunger is there, but you're not seeing a spring, maybe check inside the spring hole in the bolt with a small probe. I have on occasion found small springs that had rusted/gunked in place in their recesses, compressed to the point they weren't doing that spring thing.

Thanks... I was thinking the same thing. This gun had a bit of rust on it. Got most of the stuff cleaned up on the outside. Haven't taken the internals apart...yet. I even have a few S&W parts around mostly small stuff. I even have a couple N frame barrels...41 and 44 mag. If it was a Colt...I have the part...If I had frames I could make a few Pythons D backs and SAAs...few others too
