Leave your pistol at home. Period. You can transport through the state but not loaded or within reach.

Long guns are legal in most of the state but require a permit in the 5 boroughs.

Astoria is in NYC, specifically the Borough of Queens. Heed the advice, leave the gun at home.
NY State does not have reciprocity with any other State, and NYC is a land unto itself.

Ahhh. Astoria, Queens. There's good ethnic food around the Astoria area if you are into that sort of thing. The N train is not a "subway" there but is actually elevated. I have to drive with the family to NYC come July and I'm definitely leaving my pistol behind. I can't afford NY lawyers (to haul my a$s out of jail.)

Hijack Alert!!

What are the knife laws in NYC? I've usually got a 3" folder in my pocket and a 4" folder clipped to the opposite pocket. Legal??

NYC Admin. Code and NYS Penal Law cover knives. IIRC they are somewhat vague on specifying maximum length (but something makes me think it's 4" or 4 fingers). Switchblades (auto opening) are verboten regardless of length, as are "dirks, daggers and cane swords". Best off putting them in your pocket where they are not exposed.

This seems to be your answer (this is not legal advice or opinion!):

http://law.onecle.com/new-york...C010-133_10-133.html

b. It shall be unlawful for any person to carry on his or her person
or have in such person's possession, in any public place, street, or
park any knife which has a blade length of four inches or more.
c. It shall be unlawful for any person in a public place, street or
park, to wear outside of his or her clothing or carry in open view any knife with an exposed <span class="ev_code_RED">or unexposed</span> blade unless such person is actually using such knife for a lawful purpose as set forth in subdivision d of this section.

BUT, be sure to read subdivision d which includes lawful purpose of "is being used for or transported immediately
to or from a place where it is used for hunting, fishing, camping,
hiking, picnicking or any employment, trade or occupation customarily
requiring the use of such knife;"

NYC has a great parks system. You'd be really surprised at the beauty of NYC's parks and hiking trails. Lots of lovely places to picnic as well. That exception appears to cover having it in public view but NOT having a blade over 4".

15 days or $300. Violation, not misd or felony (but there's still the NYS Penal Law section).

THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE!
