Have you seen a Smith like this?

This is the only 'Smith I've ever seen of this type. The white insert is a 12 gauge adapter. Any ideas on how many of these were made or what they are worth. A LGS got it and knows very little about it. The "rounds" are hot. A flare and a parachute-flare, I'm told.

Yeah. I have seen it. It is a Signalpistol. They even have a Linetrower.

It's a model 209/277 Gas Pistol. I bought this one last year on Gunbroker for $400, no box. It's a 1 1/2" Cal. Flare gun on a modified 'N' frame of top break design. Most were parkerized. I call it my 1500 Mag.

They were built by the S&W Chemical Co. in Rock Creek, Ohio for the Navy in the 1970's and are serial numbered on the frame. New in Box they go for $450 and up depending on how bad the buyer wants it. They are hardly ever seen.

saw something similair at a local gun show but it was labeled a "Line Thrower" not a flare gun

I have a few questions about the flare/gas gun.

1) Is the barrel rifled?

2) If the barrel is not rifled is it considered an AOW/SBS?

3) If the barrel is rifled is it considered a DD because of the caliber/gauge?

With the 12 gauge adapter it would turn a lot of heads at the skeet range.

Yes, Smith made a line thrower and also a shoulder mounted flare gun w/longer barrel. My son saw one at the Las Vegas Antique Arms show a week ago, nice shape, parkerized and no box. Seller asking $650.

The "line thrower" version has a shoulder stock and a longer barrel, than the pistol size flare gun. Ed.

I am Hondo's son. It could have been the line thrower that i saw, dont think it was marked one way or the other and the seller didnt seem to know anything more about it? pretty cool though!

Thanks for the reply. I saw one walking around at a show a few years ago, haven't seen another since. I saw the dealer at the table next to our table take a towel and wipe it down, AKA get his prints off of it. I asked what was up with the wipe down and he said he thought it might be an AOWSBS or DD because of the non rifled barrel and 12 gauge adapter. Thanks for clarifying.
